Medical Laboratory Technologist

We are seeking a skilled Relief Medical Laboratory Technologist to join our team at Conemaugh Miners Medical Center in Hastings, PA. As a Relief Medical Laboratory Technologist, you will be responsible for performing a variety of moderately complex and highly complex tests on patients of all ages. You will apply principles, theories, and techniques according to Laboratory Practices and Procedures to produce accurate test results in Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Microbiology, and Urinalysis.
Responsibilities:
- Apply technical knowledge and skills to maintain procedural quality standards.
- Perform department-specific waived, moderately complex, and high-complexity applications.
- Maintain and apply procedural knowledge to deliver efficient, uninterrupted service, while reporting results within specified time limits.
- Perform all calibration quality control, instrument function checks, patient testing, and troubleshooting according to section procedure manual and operator's manual.
- Monitor and review QC and worksheets for completeness when requested.
- Collect and evaluate data for QA issues.
- Recognize, confirm, and/or verify test results that are unusual, delta failures, or verify failures as described in the section's procedure manual or lab practice manual.
- Help develop solutions to problems.
- Communicate opportunities to improve quality, workflow, and other pertinent issues to the coordinating tech or lab manager.
- Inform the coordinating tech or lab manager of all pertinent activities and unresolved problems.
- Investigate appropriate documentation when requested.
- In the absence of a coordinating tech or manager, coordinate services or staffing when needed.
- Assume the responsibility of charge tech on off-shifts if assigned by manager.
- Maintain professional skills through continuing education and provide appropriate care to patients of all ages.
- Assure complete and accurate training to all employees having less experience in addition to students in clinical rotation.
- Maintain effective and efficient use of reagents, chemicals, and supplies while assuring adequate supplies in all work areas.
- Perform and evaluate competency when requested or assigned by coordinating tech or lab manager.
- Follow all hospital and lab safety procedures and guidelines.
- Recognize and report unsafe practices or conditions to the manager.
- Draw venous, arterial, and capillary samples from patients according to phlebotomy procedures and age-specific needs of the patient.
- Rotate all shifts according to the schedule.
- When assigned, develop new clinical procedures or revise existing by performing method validations and writing/revising a CLSI-approved procedure.
- When assigned, coordinate the proficiency testing and review for the laboratory section.
- Follow basic infection control practices and guidelines.
- Perform sectional housekeeping.
- Perform and evaluate competency when requested.
- Perform all clerical functions related to the job, and handle specimens as directed.
Requirements:
- Education: Bachelor's degree in medical technology, MLS, or related science including at least 12 months in a hospital training program or near completion of program; or otherwise qualified as a medical technologist as defined by Federal and State Regulations.
- Experience: Preferred: One year of experience as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist in a clinical laboratory.
- Certification/Licensure/Registration: Required: Currently registered with American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or eligible for registry. Successful completion of registering within 12 months of employment. BLS/CPR within 6 months of employment.
- Skills and Abilities: Ability to meet patient age-specific needs. Ability to use critical thinking skills. Ability to follow procedures concisely and accurately at all times. Skilled at communication. Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously. Ability to successfully meet deadlines.
