Overview:

This role is designated for certified Firefighter/EMTs who will advance to a cross-trained Public Safety Officer II following successful completion of the Police Academy at the Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice Training (DOCJT). This position is classified under CERS Hazardous Duty.

Under the general oversight of the Public Safety Captain, the officer will carry out all responsibilities associated with airport safety and security. This includes, but is not limited to, structural firefighting, aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF), emergency medical services, and law enforcement duties as mandated by federal, state, and local authorities for anti-terrorism security.

Daily interactions with airport stakeholders are essential, providing customer service and assistance as needed. Additional responsibilities may be assigned. The standard work schedule for this position is 24 hours on duty followed by 48 hours off.

Key Responsibilities:


Respond to calls for service via radio, pager, and phone, attending to aircraft, structural, HAZMAT, EMS, and other requests as directed.

Actively patrol the airport to enhance public safety visibility and take necessary actions when required. Conduct training sessions as directed by department leadership on various subjects, including firefighting, EMS, and FAA regulations. Perform checks and maintenance on facilities, equipment, and vehicles to ensure operational readiness. Maintain proficiency in public safety duties, particularly ARFF functions.

Demonstrate the ability to learn and comprehend FAR Part 139, TSR Part 1542, KY Penal Code, and all relevant federal, state, and local regulations governing aviation public safety.

Understand the principles and practices of airport administration, operations, security, and public safety.
Possess strong English language skills, including effective speaking, spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Capable of preparing and delivering comprehensive oral and written reports and presentations.

Foster positive working relationships with airport tenants, employees, stakeholders, and guests, ensuring a high level of customer service in response to inquiries.

Under supervision, a Public Safety Officer I is expected to:
Coordinate public safety operations during assigned shifts, ensuring the safety and security of the public, tenants, and staff.

Ensure compliance with FAR Part 139, TSR Part 1542, Airport Security Program (ASP), and other applicable regulations.

Conduct identification media checks and audits, verify physical security access points, maintain random patrols of security areas, and assist Airport Operations as necessary.

Respond to security incidents as requested, accurately documenting occurrences and notifying Airport Operations and Public Safety leadership.

Qualifications:
Must be at least 21 years old.
Must be a U.S. citizen.
Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
Must successfully complete pre-employment physical/stress and medical examinations. A felony conviction or active criminal prosecution disqualifies candidates.

Must be vaccinated for Hepatitis B, provide evidence of immunity, or submit a declination form within ten (10) days of initial assignment.

Must pass a physical agility test.
Must pass a semi-annual physical fitness assessment.
Ability to meet the DOCJT Peace Officer Professional Standards (POPS) hiring criteria.

Certification as a Kentucky Professional Firefighter (400 hr), Kentucky EMT-B, and CPR certification are required. IFSAC 1 and 2 are preferred. NIMS 100, 200, and 700 certifications are also necessary. A current CPAT card or qualifications for exception is required. Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills are essential. Proficiency in computer usage and records management systems is necessary.

Physical/Environmental Requirements:This position is classified as "heavy" to "very heavy" work according to the Americans with Disabilities Act.
This role requires the ability to work in adverse weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold, and the capacity to work in confined or elevated spaces, including climbing ladders and scaffolding.


Working Conditions:

This position may involve exposure to toxic and noxious chemicals, bloodborne pathogens, and extreme noise, as well as hazards associated with moving parts, vehicles, and electrical currents.

Physical demands exceed those of sedentary work; candidates must be able to remain on their feet for extended periods, stoop, kneel, crouch, lift, carry, push, pull, climb, balance, walk, and/or run.

Candidates must maintain physical fitness and be capable of self-defense against potential attacks or physical assaults. The ability to restrain, lift, and/or carry individuals of varying weights is essential.

Special Requirements:Must possess a valid driver's license, pass random drug screenings, and undergo a background investigation that may include polygraph, criminal, open records, and credit checks (prior to employment). Maintain eligibility for a security access badge in accordance with the Airport Security Plan.
