Position Overview

The role involves performing manual to semi-skilled tasks that assist in the construction, upkeep, repair, or replacement of transportation infrastructure including roads, bridges, drainage systems, and other related structures under the jurisdiction of Public Works.

Compensation

Minimum: $32,760.00 annually

Responsibilities

  • Assists maintenance and construction teams in the repair of roads, bridges, and other public assets.
  • Provides support for traffic control measures and flagging operations.
  • Mows and maintains grassy areas adjacent to roadways and public properties.
  • Operates various hand and power tools, as well as light construction equipment.
  • Performs vegetation management including cutting and trimming.
  • Applies materials such as marl, sand, and gravel for road repairs.
  • Handles loading and unloading of materials and equipment.
  • Assists in the construction of concrete structures and drainage systems.
  • Sets up safety barriers and performs flagging duties as required.
  • Transports tools and equipment to and from work sites.
  • Conducts routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
  • Assists in the pouring and finishing of concrete surfaces.
  • Maintains drainage systems and related infrastructure.
  • Fills in washouts and distributes fill dirt as necessary.
  • Utilizes various tools and light construction machinery.
  • Supports masonry work and other construction tasks as needed.
  • Assists in the upkeep and repair of tools and equipment.
  • Cleans work areas upon completion of tasks.
  • Responds to emergency situations as required.
  • Performs additional related duties as assigned.
Job Specifications
  • Basic knowledge of safety protocols related to tool and equipment operation.
  • Familiarity with mechanical and powered maintenance equipment.
  • Understanding of cleaning supplies and their proper usage.
  • Proficiency in using groundskeeping and construction tools.
  • Ability to adhere to established procedures.
  • Capacity to work effectively within a team environment.
  • Ability to follow verbal instructions.
  • Physical capability to stand, bend, and kneel.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Physical Requirements
  • Involves bending, climbing, and prolonged standing; requires coordination of hands and eyes.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in adverse weather and high noise environments.
  • Ability to lift and carry tools and equipment, with a minimum lifting requirement of five (5) pounds and an average of forty-five (45) pounds, occasionally lifting up to ninety (90) pounds over uneven terrain.
Work Category
  • Heavy Work - Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Completion of sixth grade; AND
  • Six months of experience in general maintenance or construction support.

In the event of an emergency, employees may be required to fulfill responsibilities as directed by their department or emergency management authorities. Such duties may occur before, during, or after an emergency situation.
