Job Overview

Just Compassion of East Washington County is a non-profit organization dedicated to addressing the needs of individuals experiencing homelessness through relationship-building and a commitment to holistic support.

We are seeking dedicated individuals for an on-call position as Shelter Support Staff.

Schedule: On-Call, Varies
Reports To: Operations Manager
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Salary Range: Starting at $20/hr

Position Summary

The Shelter Support Staff is responsible for a variety of tasks essential to the operation of an emergency shelter. This includes processing referrals based on established criteria, welcoming and orienting guests, and providing necessary support to individuals entering the shelter. The role involves collaboration with the public and various service agencies to ensure the well-being of guests.

Key Responsibilities
  • Intake and Orientation (20%):
    • Check in guests daily and secure their belongings.
    • Facilitate smooth transitions for guests.
    • Distribute bedding items for the shelter.
    • Document accurate notes to ensure effective communication among staff.
  • Guest Support (35%):
    • Prepare and serve meals and snacks.
    • Assist guests with personal hygiene needs.
    • Distribute clothing and essentials as required.
    • Supervise guests and address any issues that arise.
    • Foster a respectful and supportive environment.
    • Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Operational Duties (20%):
    • Manage inventory of supplies, including kitchen and cleaning materials.
    • Maintain cleanliness in all areas of the shelter.
    • Participate in team meetings and ongoing skill development.
    • Adhere to all organizational policies and procedures.
  • Safety and Security (20%):
    • De-escalate conflicts and maintain a secure environment.
    • Monitor shelter grounds regularly.
    • Respond to safety concerns as needed.
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Detail-oriented and self-motivated.
  • Strong judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across teams.
  • Resourceful and adaptable in a dynamic environment.
  • Commitment to confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma.
  • Previous experience in a shelter setting.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to navigate stairs and perform physical tasks.
  • Capacity to prepare and serve meals safely.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds independently.
