The Principal Engineer plays a crucial role in the product team, contributing to the design, testing, data analysis, and management of projects.
This role also involves supporting the manufacturing process by representing the design team and initiating necessary design modifications.
Effective communication skills are essential, as the Principal Engineer must present information clearly to engineering colleagues, managers, product teams, and business leaders.
Additionally, the Principal Engineer is tasked with developing and maintaining the skill sets and work practices that align with the organization’s expectations and requirements.
Scope of WorkThis position is part of the global Air Cooled Chiller product engineering team.
The engineer will collaborate with the engineering manager to assist in the design and development of new chiller products while also supporting the production of existing products on a global scale.
Key Responsibilities- Demonstrate mastery of theories, concepts, technical principles, and processes related to fluid, thermal, and mechanical aspects of air or water-cooled chillers.
- Lead the timely completion of projects and provide regular updates on project status.
- Act as a strategic communicator, representing the business unit in planning discussions.
- Exhibit proficiency in mechanical design, conceptualizing and implementing design ideas into products, and identifying opportunities across various product families.
- Apply mechanical codes such as UL, CE, PED, and ASME.
- Resolve field issues under tight deadlines, performing root cause analysis, troubleshooting, data analysis, and corrective actions.
- Possess strong knowledge in design for manufacturing.
- Interpret electrical schematics and wiring diagrams, with knowledge of variable speed drives and magnetic bearing compressors or turbines.
- Collaborate closely with design and manufacturing teams to generate layout concepts and system configurations that optimize cost, performance, and reliability.
- Analyze, design, modify, and troubleshoot mechanical sub-components and sub-systems based on test data.
- Generate and review technical documentation for the product team.
- Occasional domestic and international travel may be required (less than 10%).
The following qualifications are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field.
- A minimum of 8 years of experience in a relevant field, with HVAC/Chiller experience preferred.
- Proficient in organizing and processing large datasets.
- Experience in product development, project management, and sustaining configurable systems.
- Able to mentor and train fellow engineers.
- Knowledge of electrical design (Power Systems).
