About the Department:
Information Technology Services is the central IT organization for the Commonwealth of Virginia, providing essential IT resources, systems, services, and tools to support the community.
The Learning Space Design team is dedicated to enhancing educational experiences by:
- Overseeing multiple large-scale technology upgrade initiatives for both formal and informal learning environments, specialized laboratories, and various meeting spaces;
- Crafting instructional technology systems for classrooms;
- Suggesting innovative technologies to further advance the educational mission; and
- Establishing university-wide AV standards.
About the Position:
The AV Project Manager plays a crucial role in design initiatives aimed at supporting educational activities through new constructions, renovations, and technology upgrades. This position is integral to developing departmental standards that are reliable, cost-effective, and based on commercially available industry hardware, software, and systems support.
Responsibilities:
- Project Management: Collaborates with team members across various units within ITS and the broader university on classroom and laboratory projects, non-traditional spaces, conference rooms, and other assigned projects; manages all phases of learning space projects from initial design in accordance with university standards, through planning, engineering, equipment procurement, implementation, vendor relations, testing, and commissioning for classroom support; oversees project planning, scheduling, training, budgeting, and coordination of the project team; ensures adherence to project budgeting processes and completion; manages and/or participates as a team member in assigned learning space projects; and ensures timely and budget-compliant delivery of all required project outcomes.
- Learning Environments & Instructional Technology Design: Provides consultation services for learning spaces and meeting rooms to university units as assigned; coordinates and consults on new technology installations, including upgrades to existing classrooms, meeting rooms, and laboratories; collaborates with AV Engineers to create AutoCAD drawings, such as floor plans and reflective ceiling plans for AV installation projects; engages with faculty, staff, or other stakeholders to gather requirements and develop technology solutions; contributes to the maintenance of university classroom technology standards, reviewing and publishing them annually; and collaborates with the Learning Space Design Manager to develop the overall architecture for AV systems and programming.
- Soft Projects: Responsible for various soft projects that support the goals of the university, which may include ticketing systems, enterprise-level support systems, and project ramp-up activities; ensures all soft projects are thoroughly documented and closed upon completion.
- Strategic Planning: Works with the Learning Space Design Manager to formulate long-term technology and budgetary plans related to technology design; supports requests for data and projections to facilitate initiatives, projects, and planning; conducts research on user requirements for new or refreshed installations as directed; and collaborates effectively with the Learning Space Design Manager in analyzing data to inform future roadmap development.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience;
- PMI, PMP, CAPM certification or the ability to obtain CAPM certification within the first year of employment preferred;
- Experience creating AutoCAD drawings to support AV upgrades in existing and renovated spaces;
- Experience working in a project team environment to complete AV installation projects under tight deadlines;
- Demonstrated organizational and management skills;
- Proven experience with large-scale AV/technology projects;
- A collaborative working style is essential for successful project completion;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
- Demonstrated experience with AutoCAD drawings for installation projects; and
- Commitment to customer service in a technical environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in a related field;
- Experience managing AV installation projects in a higher education setting; and
- Experience overseeing AV technology projects in a higher education context.
