Position Summary:
The Peer Support Specialist Supervisor plays a crucial role in guiding and mentoring Peer Support Specialists (PSS) who are trained professionals with lived experience in recovery from mental health or substance use challenges. This position involves providing support to clients as they navigate their recovery journey.
The Supervisor, under general oversight, assists clients in defining their recovery objectives, demonstrates effective coping strategies, and facilitates system navigation. The PSS Supervisor collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to ensure that clients receive comprehensive support tailored to their needs.
Positions are available in both Colorado State Mental Health Institutes. Candidates must undergo a thorough background check as part of the hiring process. Ideal candidates will have completed Peer Support Training and possess relevant experience in peer support roles. They should be prepared to discuss their self-care strategies and the challenges faced in this field.
Key Responsibilities:
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Completion of Peer Support Training is required
- A High School diploma or equivalent is necessary
- Proficiency in reading, writing, and verbal communication in English
- Minimum of two (2) years of recovery experience outside of inpatient settings
- Preferred qualifications include:
- Bachelor's Degree
- Certification as a PSS in Colorado
- Two years of experience in a PSS role
- Understanding of trauma-informed care principles
- Personal experience in a hospital environment
- Three (3) years of recovery experience outside of inpatient settings
- Compliance with CDHS policies regarding substance use is mandatory
- Annual influenza vaccination or exemption documentation is required
- Proof of vaccinations for various diseases must be provided before starting work
- Documentation of client interactions must be entered on the same day
- Foster professional relationships with clients based on mutual respect and shared experiences
- Utilize personal recovery stories to inspire hope and support others
- Encourage healthy lifestyle choices and active participation in recovery
- Facilitate peer-led services that promote goal-setting and healthy habits
- Assist clients in overcoming barriers to their recovery
- Share self-care and advocacy strategies with clients
- Demonstrate empathy and understanding of mental health challenges
- Bridge communication between clients and healthcare professionals
- Meet departmental goals and performance indicators
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings for case discussions
- Adhere to hospital policies and safety protocols
- Engage effectively with MHI staff and clients
- Maintain regular attendance to fulfill job responsibilities
- Supervise and support Peer Support Specialists
- Report to management on a regular basis
- Provide leadership and guidance to Peer Support Specialists
- Perform additional duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED is required
- Certification as a Peer Support Specialist in Colorado is required or Peer Support Training Certificate preferred
- Must have personal experience with mental health and/or substance use services
- Ability to pass a state background check and drug screening is essential
