Job Summary

This position provides health services and leadership in establishing a complete and effective program of school health. The School Nurse will work under the supervision of the building principals and Coordinator of Health Services to provide health services to students, interpret state and federal regulations, and maintain a school health record for each student.

Main Responsibilities

• Provide health services to students, including providing nursing intervention for acute illness and injury, and supporting students' health needs for returning to class whenever possible.
• Interpret state and federal regulations regarding health requirements and immunization documentation for all new students, and establish and maintain a school health record for each student based on best practice, SCPS Health Services protocols, and State Standards for Accreditation for Public Schools in Virginia.
• Maintain and adequately supervise the school health clinic, and administer individual screening of vision, hearing, and scoliosis, and evaluate, refer, and follow-up as required by Virginia school law and School Board regulations.
• Make home visits in conjunction with other support staff to assist with health-related absentee problems when appropriate, and protect the health of students and staff by controlling disease outbreak and spread of communicable diseases through enforcement of health practices, health department protocols, and school policies.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing or a graduate of an accredited program of registered nursing and hold a current license to practice nursing in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
• Two (2) years successful nursing experience, with pediatric and community health experience preferred.
• Valid Virginia Driver's License, and current certification in First Aid, CPR, and AED required.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

The work environment is primarily inside, with moderate noise, temperatures that are controlled but may require some exposure to weather, and some exposure to chemicals or other negative air quality elements. The work is medium work, requiring exertion of up to 50 pounds of force to move or lift objects.
