Implement comprehensive program of health services for campus. Provide health services to students. Promote health education and preventive health practices for students.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Nursing Services

1. Provide direct care utilizing professional assessment skills, the nursing process, and established school health protocols.

2. Practices within the defined limits of the Texas Nurse Practice Act.

3. Serve as health advocate for students.

4. Notify parents of accident or illness and secure medical care for students in emergency cases (if parents or emergency contact cannot be reached).

5. Coordinate management system to administer medications to students at school. Administer medications according to district policy and procedures.

6. Establish and implement effective procedures for mandatory screening programs. Make referrals as necessary.

7. Develop and coordinate continuing evaluation of campus health program and make changes based on findings.

Instruction

8. Participate in development of campus health education curriculum and provide health education to individuals and groups.

9. Assists staff members in interpreting school health policies regarding immunizations, communicable diseases, medications, infection control, special needs and the emergent care of the ill and injured.

10. Provide health counseling and instruction to individual students.

Consultation

11. Serve as health liaison between school, physicians, parents, and community.

12. Assess student problems and make appropriate referrals working with students, teachers, parents, and medical and health care professionals as needed.

13. Participate in Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee (ARD), crisis team, and school committees and develops Individual Health Plan.

14. Collaborate with other professionals regarding implementation of health-related Individual Education Plan (IEP) items.

15. Participate in assessment and reporting of suspected child abuse.

16. Make home visits to help with student health problems as necessary with permission of principal.

17. Communicate regularly with principal, health services coordinator, school counselor, teachers, parents, food services, and other staff regarding health services issues.

Administration

18. Review and evaluate immunization records.

19. Supervise and train nurse aide(s) and LVN(s) in clinic procedures and responsibilities according to district directive.

20. Compile, maintain, submit and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required, including clinic records and accurate, updated health records on all students.

21. Requisition supplies and equipment needed to maintain clinic inventory.

22. Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of Health rule, State Board of Education rule, and board policy in health services area.

23. Complies with confidentiality requirements as set by HIPAA, FERPA, federal, state and local regulations.

24. Report potential health and safety hazards to principal.

25. Provide campus attendance clerk(s) with list of students visiting clinic at times directed by Principal.

26. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.

Professional Development

27. Maintain certification in CPR, vision and hearing screening, and as a health screener.

28. Remain current on new medical developments in health-related fields that may enhance the effectiveness of the program.

Other

29. Participates in staff meetings and professional activities.

30. Participates on committees, such as SHAC, when required.

31. Promotes health by conducting health-related educational opportunities.

32. Occasionally required to work on another campus to accomplish certain tasks (usually occurs when another nurse is out).

33. Maintains current communication with nurses and administration.

34. Completes mandated Continuing Education Units (CEU) to maintain current license.

35. Maintains current CPR/First Aid certification.

36. Maintains current vision/hearing and Scoliosis screening certification.

37. Display tolerance necessary for accepting supervision for and criticism of job performance.

38. Work in harmony with supervisory, faculty, and peer personnel.

39. Use professional information discreetly and judiciously.

40. Support and follow administrative and Board policy.

41. Represent the school system to the community in a positive and professional way.

42. Maintain a sincere, friendly attitude toward patrons.

43. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

When required and/or applicable, provide support to the assigned licensed vocational nurse (LVN) at the Intermediate Campus and assigned Health Clinic Assistant at the Primary/Elementary campus.

Equipment Used:

Thermometer, blood pressure cuff, audiometer, sphygmomanometer, vision screening equipment, thermoscan, basic clinic equipment, personal computer, copier, and fax machine.

EXPERIENCE:

Experience: Two years nursing experience, preferably in community health Experience working with school-age children preferred

QUALIFICATIONS:

Qualifications: Education/Certification: Graduate of an accredited professional nursing education program Valid registered nurse license to practice professional nursing in Texas from the State Board of Nurse Examiners required Certified by Texas Department of Health to conduct vision and hearing screening required CPR Certification required Special Knowledge/Skills: Knowledge of health appraisal to identify student health defects Knowledge of HIPAA and FERPA regulations Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills Ability to implement policies and procedures Knowledge of basic first aid and cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) Knowledge of universal precautions applicable to handling bodily fluids and other hazardous materials; health standards and hazards; safety practices and procedures; and emergency equipment procedures applicable to the position Ability to provide first aid and CPR procedures, perform specialized health interventions such as oral suctioning, catherization, gastronomy, tube feeding, and other procedures to assist medically fragile students with special needs Ability to monitor, observe, and report student health issues and progress according to approved policies and procedures Knowledge of child guidance principles and practices Proficient keyboarding and file maintenance skills Ability to use personal computer and software to develop databases and perform word processing Ability to perform tasks aligned with Individual Education Plan (IEP) requirements Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written) Demonstrate initiative in facilitating in-services and workshops for teachers and parents
