Aviation Compliance Inspector

The Aviation Compliance Inspector (Airworthiness) oversees the geographic program within the designated area and is tasked with conducting inspections and surveillance (including certification and other assignments as directed by the principal inspector) on air carriers and air operators operating under Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (14 CFR).

This role involves identifying and establishing work programs for inspection and surveillance while adhering to manpower and budget constraints.


General Requirements for All Positions:
  • No more than two separate incidents involving violations of Federal aviation regulations in the past five years;
  • Possession of a valid State driver's license;
  • Proficiency in the English language;
  • No chemical dependencies or substance abuse that could hinder job performance;
  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Medical Requirements for All Positions:


Applicants must be physically capable of performing the duties of the Aviation Compliance Inspector role safely and efficiently.

Good distant vision in each eye and the ability to read printed materials the size of typewritten characters (glasses and contact lenses are permitted) without strain.

Ability to hear conversational speech (hearing aids are permitted).

No physical condition that would pose a hazard to themselves or others or that would interfere with their ability to fly as passengers in various aircraft.

Applicants for the Aviation Compliance Inspector, Air Carrier Maintenance positions must fulfill all of the following criteria:

  • Experience in the maintenance and repair of airframes, power plants, and aircraft systems with responsibilities for certifying airworthiness.
  • Maintenance experience with aircraft having a maximum certificated takeoff weight of 12,500 pounds or more.
  • Aircraft maintenance experience in a repair station, air carrier or airline repair facility, military repair facility, or local, state, or Federal governmental agency.
  • Aircraft maintenance work experience within the last three years.
  • Possession of an FAA Mechanic Certificate with airframe and power plant ratings.

Specialized Experience:

To qualify for this position, applicants must demonstrate in their application that they possess at least one year of specialized experience, including completed training in Maintenance, equivalent to FV-H, FG/GS-12 in the Federal Service.

Specialized experience is defined as experience that has equipped you with the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to successfully perform the duties of the position.


Specialized experience may include, but is not limited to:
  • Evaluating and deciding upon proposals to modify the authorized programs of organizations.
  • Monitoring, planning, or conducting inspection programs.
  • Ensuring that assigned organizations are properly organized, staffed, and equipped, have an adequate training program, including a reliable record-keeping system, and possess facilities and procedures that comply with all regulatory requirements.
  • Conducting enforcement investigations and preparing final reports and recommendations on outcomes.
