GENERAL OVERVIEW:

As an HVAC Technician II, you will engage in advanced mechanical work related to heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. This role encompasses the operation, upkeep, and repair of both mechanical and electrical control systems associated with HVAC equipment, including steam and hot water boilers, as well as cooling towers within sizable facilities. You will be expected to familiarize yourself with emerging technologies in microprocessor control systems as they are integrated into various facilities. This position operates under general supervision, allowing for some degree of initiative and independent decision-making.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Conduct overhauls, removals, replacements, and repairs of HVAC systems, ensuring optimal efficiency during operation.

2. Inspect, maintain, and repair steam and hot water boilers along with all auxiliary equipment, adjusting boiler water and chemicals as necessary.

3. Install and replace electrical control wiring and high-voltage wiring within HVAC systems, including damper motors, actuators, and thermostats.

4. Monitor and adjust direct-digital-control (DDC) software specific to each HVAC unit for enhanced comfort and precision.

5. Execute scheduled preventive maintenance on HVAC equipment.

6. Test refrigeration systems for leaks, locate and repair them, and adjust expansion valves while adding refrigerant as required.

7. Maintain comprehensive records and prepare reports related to work orders, repairs, installations, and compliance with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards.

8. Participate in training sessions and engage with vendor representatives to understand new control technologies.

9. Be prepared to travel to various facilities, work beyond standard hours, including weekends and holidays, and respond to emergency call-ins.

10. May provide training to junior staff.

11. Perform additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent; a degree in HVAC is preferred.

Experience: A minimum of three years of progressively responsible experience in operating, servicing, and repairing HVAC and boiler systems in commercial or residential settings, with a preference for commercial experience.

Licensure/Certification: Preferred ACR Contractor license through Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) (HVAC Class A or B License). Required EPA 608 Type 3 or Universal certification, to be obtained within six months of employment. R410A Refrigerant certification is also required within the same timeframe. A valid driver’s license from the state of residence is necessary.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

• Strong understanding of HVAC systems and equipment, with the ability to diagnose and repair malfunctions.

• Proficient in using analog and digital meters for troubleshooting electrical systems.

• Familiarity with HVAC Refrigeration codes and compliance with relevant laws and regulations.

• Ability to interpret blueprints and technical instructions.

• Strong organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.

• Excellent communication skills, capable of delivering clear presentations and reports.

• Ability to work safely and comply with safety standards.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Ability to work in various environments, including confined spaces and extreme temperatures.

• Capable of lifting and carrying weights up to 100 pounds.

• Must possess good hand-eye coordination and dexterity.

TRAVEL: Availability for travel up to 50% of the time is required.
