Sponsored Projects Accountant (Remote)

The University of Pittsburgh is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic individual for the role of Sponsored Projects Accountant. The Sponsored Projects Accounting department (SPA) is tasked with the financial oversight of grants, contracts, and cooperative agreements received by the University from various government, non-profit, and private entities, totaling approximately $900 million annually. This role will act as the financial liaison between the sponsoring organizations and the University Principal Investigator/Project Director, executing essential functions such as:

  • Activating new awards within the Oracle financial system.
  • Managing ongoing adjustments for amendments, renewals, extensions, and other modifications.
  • Preparing and submitting regular reimbursement claims and financial reports.
  • Monitoring project progress throughout its lifecycle and facilitating financial close-outs.

This position requires a detail-oriented and organized individual capable of working independently while utilizing automated accounting systems, Excel, and various databases. A Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related business field is preferred. Candidates without a business degree but with relevant experience and a willingness to learn are encouraged to apply. Equivalent relevant work experience may substitute for the degree requirement.

Job Summary

This role encompasses post-award accounting responsibilities for smaller grants and contracts, including monitoring account activities and preparing routine financial reports. Additionally, the position involves assisting with the interpretation of policies and procedures as well as preparing government reports.

Essential Functions

The Sponsored Projects Accounting department (SPA) plays a crucial role in the fiscal management of grants and contracts, with responsibilities including:

  • Financial administration of approximately $900 million in annual funding.
  • Acting as the intermediary for financial transactions between the University and sponsoring agencies.
  • Utilizing automated systems for efficient accounting practices.
