POSITION SUMMARY

The Interventional Radiology and Cardiac Catheterization Nurse is a highly skilled and experienced Registered Nurse (RN) dedicated to delivering exceptional nursing care and managing patient health outcomes.

This role reports to Cardio Pulmonary Services with a collaborative relationship to Acute Care Nursing.

The nurse in this specialized area is accountable for organizing, planning, directing, coordinating, and providing high-quality, individualized patient and family-centered care, adhering to the Watson Model of Care for a specific patient demographic. This includes recognizing and addressing the unique needs of various age groups and populations.

This role primarily supports Cardiology and Interventional Radiology, while also assisting multiple clinical departments with conscious sedation procedures for patients classified as ASA1 and ASA2 throughout the facility, including but not limited to Peri-OP, Nursing, and Endoscopy, as well as cardiac monitoring when necessary.

It is essential for the nurse to fully engage in the mission of Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital, demonstrating behaviors that align with the organization's core values. The nurse will also support the strategic objectives and quality improvement initiatives of the hospital.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Utilizes the nursing process as a systematic approach to problem-solving, leveraging knowledge and experience to anticipate and fulfill patient and family needs.
  • Conducts focused nursing assessments to identify critical areas for patient populations, recognizing subtle clinical changes and adjusting care plans accordingly.
Ensures prioritization and organization of patient care while following through with established care plans.

  • Demonstrates the necessary knowledge and skills to provide age-appropriate care tailored to the needs of patients in the assigned unit, consistently applying current research and critical thinking to make informed clinical decisions.
  • Exhibits commitment to patient satisfaction during interactions with patients, families, and colleagues.
  • Fosters and maintains a therapeutic nurse-patient relationship throughout the healthcare continuum, respecting patient rights as a fundamental aspect of care.
Conducts regular patient rounds.

  • Communicates effectively using the SBAR method during all hand-off situations.
  • Documents patient care meticulously, including assessments, interdisciplinary plans of care, implementation, evaluation, and adherence to the Watson Model of Care.
  • Anticipates factors affecting patient comfort and modifies interventions accordingly, employing various modalities.
Empowers patients and families to take an active role in their recovery.

  • Monitors and adjusts the physical environment to ensure safety.
  • Recognizes and provides age-specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Encourages interdisciplinary collaboration among nurses, physicians, and other healthcare team members to address specific patient care needs.
  • Collects and analyzes patient data to maintain fluid and electrolyte balance, ensuring airway patency and adequate gas exchange, intervening as necessary.
  • Assists with intubation and manages ventilated patients during procedures.
  • Understands the pathophysiology of patients experiencing imbalances in myocardial oxygen supply and demand, as well as those with arrhythmias.
  • Assesses and intervenes based on patients' signs and symptoms, correlating with diagnostic test results.
  • Administers medications, including vasoactive and antiarrhythmic drugs, safely while understanding their indications and expected outcomes.
  • Comprehends the indications for procedural interventions and their impact on patient pathophysiology, including the application of pacemakers when applicable.
  • Interprets diagnostic information obtained during procedures and communicates effectively with the healthcare team.
  • Monitors patients receiving thrombolytic agents and recognizes potential complications.
  • Accurately manages patient coagulation pre, intra, and post-procedure.
  • Assists with various procedures related to Cardiac and Interventional Radiology.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of equipment setup for procedures performed in the Cardiac Catheterization and Interventional Radiology Suite.
  • Troubleshoots diagnostic equipment as needed.
  • Restores and maintains hemodynamic stability in patients experiencing shock.
  • Admits and recovers patients according to established protocols.
  • Removes arterial lines and/or sheaths post-procedure as ordered.
  • Commits to addressing the educational needs of patients and families.
Utilizes appropriate resources to meet those needs and achieve favorable patient outcomes.

  • Collaborates with nursing and clinical departments throughout the patient's stay, proactively facilitating interdisciplinary communication.
  • Reviews all patient orders and communicates any changes in patient condition to the physician and team members.


Promptly contacts the physician regarding significant changes in patient condition, collaborating professionally for necessary orders and following up on revised care plans.


  • Evaluates the effectiveness of nursing interventions and documents outcomes in the interdisciplinary plan of care.
  • Demonstrates the ability to plan, supervise, instruct, and evaluate ancillary nursing personnel as needed during patient assignments.
  • Exhibits the ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating technical proficiency with monitoring and transfusion devices, especially under pressure.
  • Maintains a professional appearance in accordance with dress code policies, wearing identification badges and promoting proper identification standards.
  • Ensures a safe and clean environment that complies with regulatory standards, including Patient Safety Goals.
  • Participates in the implementation of the unit-specific Quality and Performance Improvement Plan as requested, completing monitoring forms and reporting findings.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS
A.

Education
Bachelor of Science in Nursing

B.

Qualifications/Experience

Minimum of two (2) years of clinical nursing experience in Telemetry or Critical Care (ICU, PACU, ER) nursing, adhering to regulatory guidelines and standards of practice.

Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a Cardiac Cath Lab setting.
Current California Registered Nursing license.
BCLS and ACLS certification required.
Certification in CRN or CCRN preferred.
Completion of Managing Aggressive Behavior (MAB) training within 90 days of hire or notification of requirement.
Completion of Adult Moderate Sedation class within 30 days of hire, maintained every two years.
