Role Summary

The Clinical Respiratory Care Specialist, under the guidance of the Director of Respiratory Services and supervisory staff, is responsible for delivering comprehensive Respiratory Care Therapy and managing supportive equipment as outlined in departmental protocols.

Key Responsibilities

A typical day for a Clinical Respiratory Care Specialist at Hackensack Meridian Health involves:

  • Collaborating in the assessment, treatment, and management of patients with respiratory conditions across various care settings, following physician directives.
  • Conducting cardiopulmonary assessments, monitoring, and implementing respiratory therapy techniques while educating patients and their families.
  • Gathering, analyzing, and interpreting data from physiological samples, conducting diagnostic tests, and engaging in research related to respiratory health.
  • Administering and monitoring medical gases, providing mechanical ventilation support, and ensuring effective airway management and bronchopulmonary hygiene.
  • Applying scientific principles to identify, prevent, and address acute or chronic respiratory dysfunction.
  • Executing therapeutic respiratory procedures and preparing necessary equipment as prescribed by healthcare providers.
  • Documenting all relevant information regarding therapeutic interventions and patient responses in the electronic medical record system.
  • Setting up, verifying, and operating all respiratory equipment for patients requiring assistance.
  • Participating in the management of patients on life support systems, making recommendations based on clinical assessments.
  • Engaging in emergency response protocols during trauma and critical care situations.
  • Supervising the clinical activities of Certified Respiratory Care Technicians to ensure adherence to departmental standards.
  • Maintaining and servicing ventilators and associated equipment in compliance with infection control policies.
  • Conducting quality control checks on blood gas analyzers.
  • Managing all gas manifold systems, including emergency oxygen and other medical gases.
  • Cleaning and assembling respiratory equipment according to infection control guidelines.
  • Assessing the specific needs of diverse patient populations and tailoring care accordingly, ensuring effective communication with patients and caregivers.
  • Meeting physical demands of the role, including lifting, pushing, and standing for extended periods.
  • Complying with the standards set forth in the Medical Center's organizational competencies.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned by supervisory personnel.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:
  • Graduation from an accredited Respiratory Care program.
  • Associate degree in a relevant field.
  • Thorough understanding of clinical practices in Respiratory Care.

Licenses and Certifications:
  • New Jersey Registered Respiratory Therapist Certificate.
  • AHA Basic Health Care Life Support Certification.
  • New Jersey Respiratory Care Practitioner License.

Preferred Certifications:
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program Certification.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support Certification.
