Apex Systems is in search of a Senior Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) Specialist to provide support for a critical government program.

Position: Senior PKI Specialist
Work Arrangement: Fully onsite
Working Hours: Monday to Friday, 3PM-11PM
Employment Type: Contract role with potential for extension
Compensation: $150,000 annually
Security Clearance: Active secret clearance required at minimum

Role Description:

The current opportunity involves supporting the Bureau of Information Resource Management's PKI program, which aims to enhance secure communications within the organization. This role is part of a specialized division focused on providing essential engineering and integration support for various PKI systems, both on-premises and in cloud environments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct comprehensive systems design and PKI engineering for multiple PKI systems.
  • Oversee and maintain server hardware, storage solutions, network switches, and operating systems.
  • Provide expert guidance on engineering support for PKI systems, particularly in a governmental context.
  • Ensure the upkeep of existing PKI systems, including patch management and deployment of new components.
  • Assist in the evaluation and implementation of modern authentication solutions.
  • Contribute to the design and execution of strategies for transitioning to a Zero Trust Architecture.
  • Analyze and resolve service issues to prevent future occurrences.
  • Identify security vulnerabilities and propose mitigation strategies.
  • Design and manage PKI enclaves in compliance with relevant policies and standards.
  • Address security architecture gaps and develop solutions to meet evolving requirements.
  • Create test cases and evaluation reports for system testing.
  • Maintain and update system documentation, including operational procedures and architecture documents.
  • Ensure compliance with NIST security controls across all PKI systems.
  • Guide the technical direction for PKI architecture and governance.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree with five or more years of relevant experience; or a Master's degree with three or more years of experience; additional experience may substitute for formal education.
  • Strong expertise in Microsoft server operating systems and Certificate Authority (CA) management.
  • Fundamental understanding of cryptographic principles and key management.
  • Familiarity with network devices, particularly Cisco.
  • Experience with network diagnostics and monitoring tools.
  • Knowledge of virtualization technologies, specifically VMWare.
  • Proficient in external storage solutions and SANs.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Self-motivated with the capacity to work independently.

Security Clearance:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Ability to obtain Top Secret clearance is necessary.
  • Active Secret or Top Secret clearance is preferred.

Desired Skills:

  • Familiarity with Entrust PKI products in a governmental setting.
  • Hands-on experience with Hardware Security Modules (HSMs).
  • Knowledge of Card Management Systems for Smart Cards.
  • Experience with mobile device management solutions.
  • Understanding of cloud security practices related to PKI.
  • Proficiency in PowerShell scripting or similar.
  • Expertise in LDAP and PKI Directory Management.
