Overview of the Position
The primary responsibility of this role is to oversee the daily nursing operations within the facility during your assigned shift.
This oversight must align with the prevailing federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations governing our facility, as well as directives from the Director of Nursing Services, to ensure the highest quality of care is consistently delivered.
Authority Delegation
As the Nurse Supervisor, you are entrusted with the administrative authority, responsibility, and accountability essential for executing your designated duties.
Key Responsibilities
While every effort has been made to delineate the essential functions of this position, it does not imply that these are the only tasks you will be expected to perform.

Administrative Duties
- Assist the Director of Nursing Services in managing the daily nursing activities in accordance with current regulations and guidelines.
- Engage in the development, maintenance, and revision of written policies and procedures governing the nursing service department.
- Ensure that reference materials at the nursing stations are up-to-date and recommend resources that will support the nursing service department's operational needs.
- Verify that the Nursing Service Procedures Manual is current and accurately reflects the nursing procedures conducted within the facility.
- Ensure compliance among nursing staff with the procedures outlined in the Nursing Service Procedures Manual.
- Provide written and oral reports or recommendations to the Director regarding the nursing service department's operations.
- Conduct periodic reviews of departmental policies, procedure manuals, and job descriptions, and suggest revisions to the Director.
- Assist in coordinating nursing services with other resident services to ensure a comprehensive approach to resident care.
- Ensure adherence to job descriptions by all nursing service personnel.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of the facility's quality assurance program for the nursing service department.
- Participate in facility inspections conducted by authorized governmental agencies as requested.
- Review and update residents' discharge plans as necessary.
- Meet with nursing staff and support personnel to plan departmental services, programs, and activities.
- Manage resident admissions, transfers, and discharges as required.
- Complete necessary incident reports.
- Interpret departmental policies and procedures to personnel, residents, visitors, and regulatory agencies as needed.
- Perform administrative tasks such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, and charting as necessary.
Committee Participation
- Attend various facility committee meetings as required.
- Assist in preparing reports of nursing service programs and activities for submission to committees as directed.
- Provide information to the Quality Assurance and Assessment Committee as requested.
- Participate in developing agendas for Care Plan Committee meetings as necessary.
- Engage in regular reviews of discharge plans and make them available to the Care Plan Committee as required.
- Implement recommendations from established committees as instructed by the Director.
Personnel Management
- Ensure adequate staffing of licensed practical and/or registered nurses during your shift to maintain quality care.
- Ensure sufficient availability of CNA/GNAs to meet the daily nursing care needs of residents.
- Develop work assignments and assist in task completion.
- Delegate authority, responsibility, and accountability to LPNs or RNs for their assigned duties.
- Ensure that nurse aide trainees are supervised by a licensed practical nurse.
- Conduct daily rounds to ensure compliance with work assignments among nursing personnel and report findings to the Director.
- Monitor absenteeism to maintain adequate staffing levels and report issues to the Director.
- Ensure adherence to established policies and procedures, including dress codes, by all departmental personnel.
- Address complaints and grievances from department personnel and report as required.
- Foster a collaborative working relationship with inter-department personnel and other facility departments.
- Create a warm and positive environment throughout the unit and shift.
- Hold regular meetings with your shift to identify and address issues and improve services.
- Evaluate departmental workforce and make recommendations to the Director.
- Participate in employee performance evaluations and staffing assessments, and recommend actions regarding employee status.
- Ensure fair administration of disciplinary actions in accordance with applicable laws.
- Report occupational exposures to blood, body fluids, and hazardous materials as per facility policies.
Nursing Care Responsibilities
- Inform nursing personnel of new admissions, their expected arrival times, and room assignments.
- Ensure readiness of rooms for new admissions.
- Welcome newly admitted residents and escort them to their rooms as necessary.
- Accompany physicians during rounds as needed.
- Encourage timely documentation by attending physicians.
- Notify the Director of any delays in physician visits.
- Collaborate with residents, families, and physicians in planning care and treatment.
- Notify attending physicians and next-of-kin of changes in residents' conditions.
- Conduct daily visits to assess residents' physical and emotional well-being.
- Ensure that nursing care is provided by qualified personnel.
- Review nursing notes for accuracy and compliance with residents' preferences.
- Provide direct nursing care as needed.
- Perform necessary medical procedures and assessments.
- Report issues to the Director and assist in corrective actions.
- Keep the Director informed of residents' statuses through reports.
- Assist in monitoring critically ill residents.
- Authorize restraint use when necessary and in compliance with policies.
- Ensure compliance with medication administration procedures among nursing staff.
- Monitor medication administration and treatment schedules for adherence.
- Review medication records for accuracy and completeness.
- Inspect nursing service areas for cleanliness and safety.
- Ensure frequent checks on residents unable to call for assistance.
- Meet with residents and families as necessary and report issues to the Director.
- Assist in arranging transportation for discharged residents.
- Notify family members of resident deaths as required.
Staff Development
- Participate in the planning and execution of in-service training programs.
- Develop and maintain an effective orientation program for new employees.
- Provide leadership training for LPNs and RNs.
- Encourage participation in external training programs.
- Assist in developing and revising nursing assistant training curricula.
- Support clinical supervision for nurse aide trainees.
- Contribute to annual in-service training programs.
- Assist in developing community training programs on advance directives.
- Collaborate with support services on relevant training programs.
- Ensure compliance with continuing education requirements for licensed personnel.
- Engage in ongoing education to stay current in the profession.
Safety and Sanitation
- Assist in establishing safety standards for the nursing service department.
- Identify and evaluate job-related functions for potential exposure risks.
- Ensure training for personnel on safety procedures related to exposure risks.
- Maintain adequate supplies of personal protective equipment.
- Monitor compliance with safety regulations among nursing personnel.
- Ensure cleanliness and sanitation in nursing service areas.
- Ensure adherence to hand hygiene procedures among nursing staff.
- Participate in fire safety and disaster preparedness drills.
- Contribute to the infection control program for monitoring diseases.
- Ensure compliance with infection control procedures during isolation.

Equipment and Supply Management
- Recommend equipment and supply needs to the Director.

Care Planning and Assessment
