About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Strategic Communications Specialist to join our team at the Children's Hospital Association. As a key member of our Public Affairs team, you will play a critical role in promoting awareness of our advocacy efforts and supporting the development of effective communication strategies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in media relations, including proactive pitching, executive thought-leadership planning, and event management.
  • Draft and edit a variety of communications materials, including press releases, media advisories, talking points, online content, and daily newsletters.
  • Manage the communications calendar and coordinate with staff, consultants, and partners to meet relevant timelines and deadlines.
  • Prepare and coach executives for media and speaking opportunities.
  • Develop rapid response protocols for use in identifying specific moments in the news cycle where we can proactively reach out to reporters to comment in real-time.
  • Contribute to the External Affairs strategic planning process, providing ideas and skills to develop and implement tactics supporting digital and advocacy strategy plans.
  • Manage the writing and production of data-driven reports, articles, and collateral to build awareness and understanding of children's hospitals, their patients' unique needs, and the healthcare policies affecting their ability to care for those patients.
  • Conduct thorough research, engaging with subject matter experts to draft impactful storytelling content.
  • Translate public policy analyses and action into understandable, insightful content through the research, writing, and editing process.
  • Monitor daily news clips through Meltwater.
  • Draft digital advocacy communications, including social media content, blogs, press releases, fact sheets, emails, and webpage content.
  • Partner with the Director of Advocacy to foster relationships with children's hospitals to further support advocacy campaigns.
  • Manage website content and maintenance for advocacy campaigns.
  • Act as a project manager for Public Affairs communication and campaign timelines to ensure clarity, timelines, and effectiveness.
  • Plan and execute project timelines and communicate effectively with the team and stakeholder contacts.
  • Support the Public Affairs team through various administrative and planning needs, including event planning, scheduling meetings, etc.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, public health, public policy, or a related field.
  • Minimum 6 years of experience in communications, journalism, or PR agency work.
  • Campaign or PR agency experience preferred but not required.
  • Experience writing and editing content for print and digital media.
  • Proven experience producing advocacy communications materials, including press releases, fact sheets, social media posts, blogs, etc.
  • Knowledge of Associated Press style.
  • An eye for detail and strong public relations skills; an ability to work as part of a team and under tight deadlines.
  • Familiarity with HTML, WordPress, or other Content Management Systems.
  • Experience in PAC work.
  • Strong project management skills.
