Position Title: Science Educator for Middle School

Reports to: This role is supervised and assessed by the School Principal.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Education or a related discipline; a Master's degree is advantageous.
  • Valid Teaching Certification with appropriate endorsements for the designated grade level and/or subject area.
  • Prior experience in teaching middle school students.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of child development, teaching methodologies, and effective instructional practices.
  • Enthusiasm for incorporating creative arts into the educational framework.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Proficient in computer applications, including Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
  • Dedication to fostering an inclusive and supportive educational atmosphere for all learners.
  • Capacity to adapt to a dynamic teaching environment and contribute positively to the school culture.

Position Description: The Detroit Academy of Arts and Sciences is on the lookout for a committed and enthusiastic Science Educator for Middle School to join our vibrant team. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong dedication to cultivating a welcoming and inclusive learning environment, alongside a genuine passion for supporting the academic and personal growth of middle school students. In this role, you will significantly influence the educational journey of our students, encouraging creativity, analytical thinking, and a passion for discovery.

Physical Requirements: Light Work: Involves exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force as frequently as necessary to move objects; includes frequent standing, stooping, bending, pushing, and pulling.

Terms of Employment: Compensation and benefits will align with the District's approved salary structure. The starting salary for certified educators is $51,300. The work year and hours will be established by the District.

Evaluation: Job performance will be assessed by the School Principal in accordance with the Board's evaluation policies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and execute engaging lesson plans that are developmentally appropriate and aligned with the school's curriculum and state standards.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment that promotes a love for learning and encourages respectful interactions among students.
  • Adapt teaching strategies to meet diverse learning needs, ensuring all students receive the support they require.
  • Regularly evaluate student progress through various assessment methods.
  • Provide constructive feedback to students and communicate their progress to parents/guardians.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, administrators, and support staff to enhance the educational experience and contribute to a positive school culture.
  • Maintain open lines of communication with parents/guardians through updates, conferences, and school events.
  • Stay current with educational trends, engage in professional development, and seek opportunities to improve teaching practices.
  • Participate in the Teaching and Learning Cycle, which includes data analysis, action planning, re-teaching lessons, and reflecting on instructional practices.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of specialized student plans, such as Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) and Behavior Plans.
  • Promote a professional environment characterized by mutual respect, teamwork, and accountability.
  • Adhere to the District's and School's policies and procedures as outlined in the relevant manuals.
