Position Summary:

The Naval Science Education Facilitator (NSEF) serves as an Enlisted or Warrant Officer without a Bachelor's degree. The NSEF collaborates with the Senior Naval Science Instructor to deliver the curriculum while embodying the mission, vision, and values of the Detroit Public Schools Community District. The role involves working closely with families and staff to promote the academic achievement of students, along with evaluating and tracking student progress regularly.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Active Enlisted/Warrant Officers in the Reserve with 10 years of honorable service in the ranks of E-6 through E-9 or W1-W5; or those separated/retired within the last 5 years with a minimum of 10 years cumulative honorable service in the same ranks are eligible to apply. Exceptions to policy are required for separations exceeding 5 years.
  • Must meet the minimum qualifications set forth by the Department of Defense.
Key Responsibilities:

The NSEF will execute duties in accordance with current regulations, policies, and procedures established by NSTC and the host institution. The NSEF will report to the SNSI and NJROTC Area Manager for administrative and logistical guidance. Specific responsibilities include:
  • Delivering the prescribed 3- or 4-year Naval Science curriculum.
  • Instructing students in military drill.
  • Providing counseling to students enrolled in the NJROTC program.
  • Developing and updating lesson plans for the NJROTC curriculum.
  • Mentoring cadets and assisting them with educational and career aspirations.
  • Managing requisition of all government-provided equipment, including uniforms and training aids.
  • Coordinating the cleaning and alteration of uniforms.
  • Conducting inventory control of all government-provided materials.
  • Ensuring the security of all government-provided equipment.
  • Planning and executing extracurricular activities for the NJROTC unit.
  • Preparing periodic reports on program management and logistics.
  • Staying informed about new developments within the Navy.
  • Assessing unit performance to ensure NJROTC program objectives are achieved.
  • Participating in Navy-sponsored training to remain updated on program management requirements.
  • Building relationships with school counselors and faculty.
  • Presenting the NJROTC program to potential students to encourage recruitment.
  • Maintaining financial records related to the operating budget.
  • Preparing financial requests for reimbursement to the Navy for program-related expenses.
  • Engaging with community organizations to foster support for the NJROTC program.
Security Clearance:

Internal Applicants: Current employees of the Detroit Public Schools Community District are not required to undergo a new security clearance unless the new position necessitates a different type of background check.

External Applicants: In accordance with Michigan law, candidates hired for this position will be required to undergo a criminal background check.
