About the Role

We are seeking a skilled Vehicle Maintenance Technician to join our team at Denver Public Schools. As a key member of our transportation department, you will be responsible for performing repairs, maintenance, and inspections of our fleet of vehicles.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform annual inspections on district vehicles and complete necessary paperwork
  • Inspect and sign off on vehicle repairs, ensuring they meet standards
  • Disassemble vehicles for inspection, diagnose issues, and perform repairs
  • Complete daily time reporting and submit to Shop Supervisor
  • Test drive vehicles and test components and systems using diagnostic equipment
  • Track time worked on each vehicle and operate service trucks for district vehicle breakdowns
  • Perform operator pre-trip vehicle inspections and maintain a safe work environment
  • Determine work sequences and prioritize repairs based on work priority and part availability
  • Participate in team work environment, communicate with other technicians and supervisors, and assist in developing new practices and technology
  • Record maintenance activities using computerized systems and ensure maintenance standards are met
  • Execute contingency plans during inclement weather operations and communicate with vehicle operators
  • Update and train other personnel on fleet maintenance practices and communicate current knowledge
  • Work to maintain current CDE Inspector certification and ASE certifications
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED certificate
  • Two years of vehicle maintenance experience and demonstrated initiative in taking ASE tests and completing OJT with a journeyman level maintenance technician
  • ASE certification in school bus/automotive/heavy truck preferred
  • Experience in transportation organization, preferably school bus operations and fleet maintenance
  • Valid State of Colorado Driver's License (CDL) with Class A and BP2S endorsements
  • Ability to meet insurability requirements of the Self Insurance Pool for driving a district vehicle
  • Strong attention to detail, effective communication skills, and ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Knowledge of maintenance skills, fleet maintenance software, and vehicle diagnostic systems
  • Ability to troubleshoot and technical skills for diagnosis and repair
