Position Overview

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at California State University is seeking applications for its lecturer pool, which includes both part-time and full-time opportunities.

We invite applications from candidates with specialized knowledge or experience in the following domains:
  • The interrelationships among Earth's four major systems (solid earth, atmosphere, ocean, biosphere); the origins and potential societal impacts of natural Earth phenomena (such as earthquakes, floods, landslides, tsunamis, volcanic activity, weather patterns, and global climate shifts); the management, accessibility, and exhaustion of natural resources (including water, minerals, and energy); engineering geology; introductory environmental studies; inquiry-based processes and critical thinking skills pertinent to earth and environmental sciences; and the dynamic changes in Earth's landscape on both regional and global scales.
Temporary appointments may be available on either a full-time or part-time basis. Positions from the part-time pool are typically filled shortly before the commencement of the academic term, thus applicants should be prepared for immediate availability. The academic calendar includes a Fall term that runs from mid-August to late December, and a Spring term from mid-January to mid-May. Opportunities for teaching during Summer Sessions may also be offered. Initial appointments are generally for one semester or one academic year, with the possibility of renewal based on satisfactory performance and ongoing availability of positions. Applications will remain active in our candidate pool throughout the academic year.

Qualifications

Required Criteria
  • Advanced degree in geology, geophysics, Earth and environmental sciences, or a closely related field.
  • Experience in teaching at the college or university level.
  • Proven expertise in the subject matter.

Initial rank and salary for lecturer positions will be determined based on professional experience and educational qualifications, as assessed by the hiring department. Most new hires are typically appointed at the Lecturer A or B rank and placed at the beginning of the salary range.

As of the latest update, the salary ranges for the respective ranks are as follows:

Lecturer A: $5,007 - $6,359
Lecturer B: $5,925 - $12,594
Lecturer C: $6,500 - $13,831
Lecturer D: $8,184 - $14,487

In accordance with Education Code 89521, California State University mandates that employment applicants disclose any final administrative or judicial decisions made within the past seven years that determine the applicant committed sexual harassment. This requirement is applicable to candidates who meet the minimum qualifications for the academic or administrative position they are applying for.
