State Veterans Service Officer

About the RoleThe State Veterans Service Officer is a valuable member of the South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs. This position serves as a liaison to assist veterans and their families in filing claims for state and federal benefits.
Key Responsibilities- Provide benefits outreach and general assistance to veterans and their families in applying for VA and state benefits;
- Work with the claims office team assisting veterans and their families with filing claims, addressing other issues relating to VA and state veteran benefits, and participating in outreach and training activities;
- Assist veterans and their families with the admission process into the State Veteran's Home;
The ideal candidate will have:
- Great communication skills, both verbal and written;
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to provide excellent customer service to a variety of people;
- Possess and maintain a current South Dakota driver's license;
- Knowledge of VA and state veteran benefits;
- Modern office equipment, practices, and procedures;
- Strong interpersonal skills;
- Effective communication skills;
- Demonstrate compassion, respect, courtesy, and tact when interacting with others;
- Maintain composure and a positive customer-service oriented manner;
- Attention to detail;

This position is a member of Class A retirement under SDRS.
Applicants must meet the following requirement to be considered:
Requirement: 33A-2-1. Veteran defined.
For the purposes of all statutes relating to rights, privileges, ceremonial recognition, exemptions, and benefits (except a state bonus) of veterans and their dependents, the term, veteran, means any person who:
- Has served the full obligation for active duty, reserve, or National Guard service in the military, or received an early discharge for a medical condition, hardship, reduction in force, or at the convenience of the military;
- Has been separated or discharged from such service honorably or under honorable conditions.
Therefore, applicants for this position must submit a copy of their DD214 discharge papers with their application.
This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
Successful applicant(s) will be required to undergo a background investigation. An arrest/conviction record will not necessarily bar employment.
The State of South Dakota does not sponsor work visas for new or existing employees.
All persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and complete an Employment Eligibility Verification, Form I-9.
The State of South Dakota as an employer will be using E-Verify to complete employment eligibility verification upon hire.
