Salary Range

$40.85 – $54.74 per hour

Hiring Salary

$40.85 – $45.03 per hour

A hybrid remote/office schedule may be available after passing the introductory period.

Job Responsibilities

Under general direction, performs professional engineering work and technical engineering support work related to District and development projects, including planning and environmental compliance, communication and record-keeping. Provides project coordination and contract administration. Acts as the lead worker over Engineering Technicians in the absence of the supervisor on projects. Performs related duties as required.

Supervision Received and Exercised

This position reports directly to the Development Services Senior Engineer.

The Assistant Engineer does not supervise any staff but may train and monitor the workload and schedules of Engineering Technicians to keep the Senior Engineer informed of possible project delays or concerns.

Typical Qualifications

The ideal candidate has experience reviewing plan checks for large water, sewer, or street improvement plans.

Experience reviewing engineering cost estimates is preferred.

The ideal candidate is capable of performing hydraulic analysis of water and sewer studies, including gravity flow, pressure pipe, and pump design.

The preferred candidate possesses a bachelor's degree in civil or environmental engineering.

The successful candidate communicates courteously and professionally at all times. This position will deal with different types of stakeholders and must be able to adjust their communication style accordingly.

This person can prioritize and complete their work independently, without the need for constant oversight.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Principles, practices, methods, and materials of civil engineering support work, including planning, mapping, drafting, design, and specifications, estimation, and construction practices and methods as related to District water supply, wastewater collection, and reclamation systems and facilities;
  • Engineering mathematics; hydraulics; and water/wastewater treatment;
  • Principles and practices of contract administration, technical writing, data collection and analysis methods;
  • Standard office practices and procedures; operation of standard office and engineering equipment, including computers and reproduction equipment;
  • Software used for word processing and spreadsheets; computer-aided design software, such as AutoCAD and Bluebeam Revu design software; water and wastewater modeling computer software, such as WaterGEMS and SewerGEMS.

Ability to:

  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing;
  • Keep accurate records, analyze data and information, and draw logical conclusions;
  • Read plans and figures quickly and accurately and perform applicable mathematical computations;
  • Plan, organize, track, and coordinate Development Services projects; manage projects and perform contract administration; meet critical deadlines; work independently;
  • Perform engineering support work in a variety of work areas;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public during the work;
  • Analyze information, evaluate alternatives, and make sound recommendations; explain and apply policies and procedures;
  • Understand and follow verbal and written directions;
  • Operate a computer and use a variety of computer software.
Education and Experience

Any combination of education or experience that would likely provide the necessary knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Possession of a bachelor's degree in civil or environmental engineering OR Engineer-in-Training certificate from the State of California is required.

At least one year of experience in technical engineering support work that included reading and interpreting background data, independent research, designs, plans, and specifications is required.

Licenses, Certificates, and Special Requirements

In lieu of a Bachelor's degree in civil or environmental engineering, possession of an Engineer-in-Training certificate in the State of California is required.
