POSITION OVERVIEW
The individual in this role is tasked with overseeing the well-being of residents in designated smoking zones within the facility. This includes:

Having a comprehensive understanding of residents identified as high-risk smokers.

The Smoking Safety Coordinator reports directly to the Licensed Nursing Staff assigned to each resident.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Candidates should possess the ability to read, write, and follow verbal instructions. A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to provide care and supervision to ensure the safety of residents at all times.
  • Exhibit effective interpersonal skills.
  • Maintain good emotional, mental, and physical health, demonstrating sound judgment and high standards.
  • Display courtesy when interacting with residents, families, and staff.
  • Maintain a neat and professional appearance at all times.
  • Demonstrate a desire to work with geriatric residents and their current and future needs.
  • Be punctual and ready to commence assigned duties as scheduled.
  • Willingness to work preferred shifts and assist on other shifts as necessary to ensure adequate staffing.
  • Ability to function as a cooperative team member within the Nursing Department and other departments.
  • Capable of monitoring residents in accordance with facility policies and procedures.
  • Adaptability to on-the-job training and adherence to facility standards, assisting residents, managing equipment and supplies, and understanding basic safety practices.
  • Ability to respond appropriately in emergency situations or evacuations.
  • Follow directions from supervising staff effectively.
  • Complete a pre-employment and annual Tuberculosis screening examination.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Smoking Safety Coordinator operates under established, consistent assignments for each shift but must be flexible to adapt to changing needs. Responsibilities include:

  • Signing in according to facility protocols.
  • Maintaining an updated list of residents identified as high-risk smokers and implementing recommended interventions.
  • Ensuring that no oxygen is present in the smoking area at any time.
  • Monitoring all residents in the smoking area, addressing any safety concerns as they arise.
  • Reporting safety issues to the Charge Nurse or Director of Nursing.
  • Providing assistance to residents as needed.
  • Remaining in the assigned area while supervising high-risk smokers until they have finished and left the area or are relieved by another staff member.
  • Keeping the smoking area free from debris and clutter.
  • During adverse weather conditions, limiting residents' exposure and encouraging indoor smoking when available.
  • Assisting residents in planning their smoking schedules to ensure they receive adequate care while attending to their desired activities.
  • Reporting any changes in resident conditions or concerns from residents or families to the licensed nurse.
  • Maintaining a safe environment at all times.
  • Performing additional tasks as assigned.
  • Participating in required staff training, meetings, and continuing education activities.
  • Understanding and adhering to the Patient's Bill of Rights and maintaining confidentiality of patient information, including HIPAA regulations.
  • Interacting with residents, families, co-workers, and clinical staff in a supportive and calm manner.
  • Being aware of and complying with Patient Abuse Reporting Law.
  • Participating in the orientation of new staff and demonstrating a positive and helpful attitude.
