Role Responsibilities

We are looking for candidates for the position of Construction Engineering Inspector Trainee, who will assist in providing Construction, Engineering, and Inspection (CEI) services for transportation projects. This entry-level role involves supporting senior inspectors and engineers in tasks related to highway and bridge construction oversight. The work will be conducted under both technical and administrative guidance and may encompass additional duties as assigned.

This position is intended for future, long-term opportunities in the greater Atlanta area or potentially other regions within the state.

Key Duties Include:

  • Conducting routine and standardized tasks, including manual and electronic calculations, and inspections of construction processes and materials to ensure adherence to project specifications.
  • Reviewing truck load tickets for roadway aggregate base course, borrow materials, and asphaltic concrete at construction sites.
  • Performing basic materials sampling, inspection, and testing.
  • Carrying out administrative duties related to contracts, which may involve measuring pay item quantities, project close-out procedures, and other required documentation.
  • Utilizing various equipment such as Slump Cones, Air Meters, Measuring Wheels, and Thermometers, with comprehensive training provided for all necessary tools.
  • Working in diverse environments, including remote sites with construction machinery, drilling rigs, and potential environmental hazards.

Essential Skills and Qualifications

  • Strong verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Excellent organizational and multitasking skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with team members.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Basic computer proficiency (e.g., Microsoft Office 365, email, internet).
  • Some familiarity with surveying or highway construction principles.
  • General understanding of mathematical concepts.
  • Competence in using office equipment such as calculators.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, contract specifications, and inspection protocols.
  • Valid driver's license in accordance with state regulations.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Capability to operate equipment on uneven terrain and around active construction zones.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds, kneel, stoop, and climb as required.
  • Proficient in driving larger vehicles and trailers.
  • Ability to use hands for operating field equipment.
  • Normal vision and hearing capabilities.

Required Certifications

Successful candidates must obtain the following certifications within the first year of employment:

  • Passing scores on GDOT's Construction Engineering Inspection Training tests – Group 1 (General Provisions, Auxiliary Items, Basic Highway Math, Basic Highway Plan Reading).
  • GSWCC Level 1a (Erosion Control).
  • GDOT WECS.
  • GDOT Field Concrete Technician Certification.

Compensation Overview

The salary range for this position is $35,000 to $50,000 annually. The final compensation will be determined based on various factors, including the candidate's experience, skill set, educational background, and any relevant certifications or licenses.
