Patient Services Representative PRN

JOB SUMMARY AND SCOPE
The primary responsibility of this role is to efficiently manage the processing of patients across various services within the hospital. This includes maintaining a professional front desk reception, handling switchboard operations, and overseeing patient registration.
Patient Education Responsibilities
The registration clerk will provide essential information to patients regarding:
- Free Care
- Advanced Directives
- Patient Consent
- Patient Rights
- Notice of Privacy Practices
- Advanced Beneficiary Notices
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Switchboard Operations:
- Efficiently manage all inquiries and requests at the front desk and switchboard, including answering incoming calls and directing them to the appropriate departments.
- Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of staff changes.
- Record the arrival and registration times for all patients seeking services.
- Manage visitor sign-ins for Obstetrical patients and handle incoming patient mail by room number.
Registration Responsibilities:
- Complete all necessary data entry on registration profiles and verify patient information for each service date.
- Assess patients' insurance coverage and eligibility, staying informed about outpatient coverage issues and medical necessity.
- Prepare and explain Advanced Beneficiary Notices when applicable and complete Medicare Secondary Payer Questionnaires for Medicare patients.
- Assist physician office staff with understanding National Coverage Policies and ensure patients sign hospital consent forms.
Additional Duties:
- Verify outpatient orders and required information, establish the existence of Advanced Directives, and prepare all necessary preoperative and surgical paperwork.
- Identify patients who may qualify for Free Care and provide application assistance.
- Maintain adequate supplies for job functions and adhere to the departmental dress code.
Attendance and Compliance:
- Exhibit reliable attendance and punctuality, including appropriate break management and flexibility to extend shifts as needed.
- Perform all duties in a safe manner, adhering to safety policies and procedures.
- Comply with the Code of Conduct and all relevant policies and procedures.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- High School Diploma or GED with on-the-job training.
- Proficiency with various computer systems and typing skills.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and health insurance plans.
- Familiarity with business office operations and general office equipment.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively under pressure, demonstrating excellent communication and organizational skills.
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND ENVIRONMENT
- This position is primarily sedentary, with occasional lifting of up to 10 pounds. The role involves sitting for extended periods, with brief standing or walking as needed.
EXPOSURE RISK
- Exposure Category III: Employees are not expected to be at risk for exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
QUALITY IMPROVEMENT
- Maintain current knowledge of the hospital-wide Quality Improvement Program and collaborate with management to enhance departmental effectiveness.
COMPLIANCE
- Adhere to all federal, state, and local regulations, as well as the Compliance Program policies of Down East Community Hospital.
