About This Position:

Extension agents serve as vital educators and community leaders, bridging the gap between Kansas State University and local communities. They are accountable to the director of K-State Research and Extension and the local extension board.

The Sunflower District encompasses several counties in northwest Kansas, with a dedicated team serving a population of over 10,000 residents.

This role involves spearheading the creation, execution, and assessment of educational programs grounded in research, focusing on agriculture and natural resources. Topics may include livestock management, agricultural economics, horticulture, and environmental conservation.

Approximately 30% of the land in the district is dedicated to grasslands, primarily for cattle production, with a significant number of livestock operations present.

Key Responsibilities:

Extension agents are essential educators and community leaders, linking Kansas State University with local communities. They share responsibilities with the director of K-State Research and Extension and the local extension board.

  • Lead the development, execution, and evaluation of educational programs focused on agriculture and natural resources, covering topics such as livestock production, agricultural management, and environmental stewardship.
  • Contribute to youth development initiatives related to agriculture and natural resources, including youth livestock programs.
  • Oversee community 4-H clubs, involving volunteer recruitment, youth engagement, and event management.
  • Support the Master Gardener Program, which consists of trained volunteers providing horticultural education.
  • Participate in community vitality programming aimed at enhancing the quality of life in local areas.
  • Successful extension programs require agents to:
    • Identify local needs and emerging issues through engagement with community organizations.
    • Design educational strategies to address these needs, utilizing various methods including community-based programming and innovative technologies.
    • Collaborate with local partners to meet community and programmatic needs.
    • Ensure equitable access to educational programming for diverse audiences.
    • Document and communicate the impact of educational programs.
    • Develop expertise in specific subject areas by participating in Program Focus Teams.
  • Seek funding opportunities to support educational initiatives.
  • Work collaboratively with the Sunflower District team to plan and deliver district-wide programming.

Additional Requirements:

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Salary is commensurate with experience and funding availability, starting at $45,000 for a bachelor's degree and $49,000 for a master's degree.
  • Extension agents are educators at Kansas State University and are eligible for a retirement plan, vacation, sick leave, and health insurance benefits.
  • Travel reimbursement for program-related activities.
