Job Overview

Herriman City Police Department is currently seeking applications for Substitute Crossing Guards to ensure the safety of children in our community during school hours. This role is seasonal, operating from August through May, with shifts scheduled before and after school. We are in search of dedicated and detail-oriented individuals to provide exceptional service to our community.

General Responsibilities

The primary duty involves preparing crossing zones and assisting children in safely navigating streets while they attend school.

Supervision

This position operates under the guidance of the Crossing Guard Coordinator and is ultimately accountable to the assigned Police Sergeant or Commander.

Key Duties
  • Safely directs or escorts pedestrians across streets, halting traffic as necessary.
  • Guides and manages both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
  • Communicates traffic and crossing regulations to students and adults.
  • Utilizes signs, flags, and hand signals to direct traffic flow and alert to hazards.
  • Monitors traffic patterns to identify safe opportunities for pedestrians to cross.
  • Distributes traffic control signs and markers at designated locations, activating school crossing signs and flashing speed limit lights as required.
  • Wears and employs safety gear (vest, cones, stop signs) while exercising caution in the roadway.
  • Educates school children on the importance of adhering to traffic regulations.
  • Participates in city or special events as requested by school officials or the crossing guard coordinator.
Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.

Knowledge:

  • Familiarity with current Utah traffic laws and emergency protocols.
  • Proficient use of the English language.
  • Ability to utilize a smartphone application for scheduling and timekeeping.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Ability to walk continuously for up to one hour with minimal breaks.
  • Must possess adequate sight and hearing for effective traffic control and hazard monitoring.
  • Capable of holding stop signs visible to vehicles while walking.

Work Environment:

This role involves working in the roadway alongside moving vehicles, requiring mental agility to engage with children and communicate effectively. Employees will work in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, wind, snow, and rain, and must be prepared for extended periods of walking and standing.

Note: In the event of an emergency or natural disaster that poses a threat to public safety, employees may be assigned to assist in rescue and relief efforts, which may involve tasks different from their usual responsibilities.
