Job Overview

Herriman City Police Department is currently seeking applications for Substitute Crossing Guards within the Herriman City Community. This position is seasonal, operating from August to May, with shifts scheduled before and after school hours. We are in search of dedicated and detail-oriented individuals to provide exceptional service to our community and its children. Substitutes will be prioritized for additional assigned locations as they become available. Herriman City offers a supportive work environment, making it an excellent place for employment.

General Purpose

The role involves preparing crossing zones and assisting children in safely navigating streets during school hours.

Supervision

Employees will work under the guidance of the Crossing Guard Coordinator, ultimately reporting to the assigned Police Sergeant or Commander.

Key Responsibilities
  • Guide pedestrians across streets, halting traffic as necessary.
  • Manage vehicular and pedestrian traffic effectively.
  • Communicate traffic regulations and crossing information to students and adults.
  • Direct traffic flow and alert to hazards using signs, flags, and hand signals.
  • Monitor traffic patterns to identify safe crossing opportunities for pedestrians.
  • Set up and manage traffic control signs and markers at designated locations.
  • Utilize safety equipment, including vests and stop signs, while exercising caution in the roadway.
  • Educate school children on the importance of adhering to traffic rules.
  • Participate in city or special events as requested by school administrators or the crossing guard coordinator.
Minimum Qualifications

Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Familiarity with current traffic laws and emergency protocols.
  • Proficient use of the English language.
  • Ability to utilize a smartphone application for scheduling and timekeeping.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Ability to walk continuously for up to one hour with minimal breaks.
  • Good vision and hearing for effective traffic monitoring.
  • Capability to hold stop signs visible to vehicles while walking.
Work Environment

Work is performed in roadways alongside moving vehicles, requiring mental agility to engage with children effectively. Employees will be exposed to various weather conditions, including heat, cold, wind, snow, and rain, and will be required to stand and walk for extended periods.

Additional Information

In the event of an emergency or natural disaster, employees may be assigned to assist with rescue and relief efforts, which may involve different tasks than their usual responsibilities.
