About the Role
This position entails overseeing the design, development, and evaluation of intricate electro-mechanical components, systems, and equipment, encompassing both new and existing products.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct design initiatives for Leviton's Residential Business Units product development projects.
- Identify, develop, and implement innovative and practical solutions that align with product development strategies and requirements.
- Lead the creation of specifications, designs, and testing methodologies for new products.
- Complete the design, analysis, and development of mechanical components, systems, and equipment, including assembly and part drawings, as well as necessary documentation from concept to manufacturing release.
- Provide competitive benchmarking insights through comprehensive analysis, testing, and research.
- Mentor and train fellow engineers, collaborating with manufacturing throughout the development phases to ensure product manufacturability and design intent.
- Investigate new development technologies, make recommendations to management, and oversee their implementation.
- Develop multiple design concepts and collaborate with Document Control to compile a comprehensive document package detailing the complete design and implementation of a product, including 2-D drawings, Bills of Materials, and Engineering Change Orders.
- Ensure system and product quality by designing testing methodologies; test finished products and system capabilities; confirm fabrication, assembly, and installation processes; generate testing and validation plans for designs and execute them.
- Analyze existing designs and products for enhancements and troubleshooting opportunities.
- Research various mechanical engineering challenges related to parts and processes.
- Ensure that design and project objectives meet both customer and Leviton standards.
Qualifications
- Proficient in applying FEA, FMEA, and customer feedback to product design and development.
- Strong leadership and management skills, particularly in working with external design resources, including experience managing budgets, timelines, design scope, and manufacturing activities.
- In-depth knowledge of advanced drafting terminology and symbols (GD&T).
- Experienced in design, prototyping, and evaluation of injection molded plastics, metal stampings, die castings, forgings, and sheet metal fabrication, along with material selection.
- Solution-oriented with a creative approach to designing and developing complex mechanical components, systems, and equipment.
- Effective communication skills, capable of conveying ideas and knowledge to individuals and teams, both in writing and verbally.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment with minimal guidance.
- Competent in utilizing engineering economic analysis for decision-making purposes.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering required; Master's preferred.
- Over 10 years of mechanical engineering experience.
- Extensive experience in design concepts and manufacturing of products using high-volume, automated processes as well as manual assembly.
- Background in consumer product or electro-mechanical device design.
- Advanced proficiency in 3D CAD and drafting; SolidWorks preferred.
- Experience in structured Phase Gate product development and technology development processes.
- Knowledge of regulatory compliance and validation testing methods is a plus.
Travel
- Up to 15%, including some international travel required.
