Job Summary

The Department of Health and Exercise Science at Colorado State University is seeking a Chief Scientific Officer to lead the Sleep and Metabolism Laboratory. As a key member of the research team, you will be responsible for driving the scientific vision and strategic direction of the laboratory.

Key Responsibilities
  • Foster and implement the scientific strategy and vision for the lab in alignment with the institutions goals.
  • Provide leadership in identifying emerging trends, technologies, and opportunities in the fields of sleep/circadian, exercise physiology, and nutrition.
  • Drive innovation by facilitating the translation of research findings into tangible products such as manuscripts, abstracts, and conference proceedings.
  • Assist the CEO with the planning, execution, and dissemination of research projects within the lab.
  • Ensure that research activities adhere to ethical standards, regulatory requirements, and institutional policies.
  • Manage resources effectively, including budget allocation, grant funding, personnel, and infrastructure.
  • Optimize resource utilization to support the SAM Labs scientific objectives and long-term sustainability.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior researchers, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students within the lab.
  • Support professional development and career advancement of trainees through training opportunities, networking, and mentorship programs.
  • Ensure that research activities comply with relevant regulatory standards, safety protocols, and ethical guidelines.
  • Implement quality assurance measures to uphold the integrity and reproducibility of research findings.
Requirements
  • Ph.D. or equivalent degree in human physiology or related field.
  • 3+ years of post-doctoral experience.
  • 5+ years of full-time professional experience in clinical research (includes post-doctoral experience).
  • Proven track record of research excellence and leadership in academia or industry as evidenced by successful grant applications and/or leadership positions held.
  • Analytical, statistical, and programming capabilities (e.g. proficient in R, Python, SQL, SAS or related programs).
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and executing scientific strategies as evidenced by previous history designing and conducting clinical trials.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience in medical or scientific writing as evidenced by a track record of publications in scientific journals.
  • Prior experience as a faculty member.
  • Postdoctoral training specific to clinical sleep and circadian research.
  • Experience working with time series data.
  • Grant writing experience demonstrated by a history of extramural funding.
  • Knowledge of funding mechanisms available.
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements and ethical standards governing scientific research (e.g., IRB, ICJME).
  • Experience in mentoring and supervising research personnel, including students and postdoctoral fellows.
