Position Overview The Environmental Specialist at UNC Asheville plays a crucial role in advancing sustainability initiatives within Campus Operations. This department has a longstanding commitment to environmental stewardship, which is integral to the University’s strategic vision.

Under the supervision of the Grounds Manager, the primary focus of this role is to oversee the Waste Reduction and Recycling Program. This initiative aims to foster a culture of sustainability across the campus, working collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students to enhance engagement and understanding of waste minimization practices.

Additional responsibilities include involvement in various existing programs such as Bee Campus, Tree Campus, invasive species management, stormwater management, and conducting a comprehensive tree inventory across the campus.

Key Responsibilities:
- Development and implementation of sustainability programs.
- Collection, entry, and analysis of relevant data.
- Reporting on program effectiveness and areas for improvement.
- Collaborating with the Design and Construction Department to assess waste streams and address environmental concerns during construction activities.

**Qualifications:**
- A Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, biological sciences, engineering, environmental science, natural resources, or a related field, accompanied by at least one year of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Preferred candidates will have a Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline and one to three years of practical experience in environmental management or sustainability efforts. Experience in recycling coordination, waste reduction strategies, stormwater management, and land management is advantageous.
- A valid driver’s license is highly preferred.
- Proficiency in computer applications, including Windows, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel, is essential.

**Desired Skills:**
- Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities.
- Familiarity with standard waste reduction and recycling practices, as well as campus-based sustainability initiatives.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and special projects effectively.
- Capability to supervise and guide others in task completion.
- Competence in maintaining detailed records and preparing comprehensive reports.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse groups, including students, staff, and external partners.
- Knowledge of GIS mapping software and website development is a plus, though not mandatory.

**Work Schedule:**
Typical working hours are Monday through Friday, with occasional evening and weekend commitments as required by departmental needs.
