Minimum Educational Requirements

Graduation from a CAPTE accredited physical therapy program (Required)

Licenses and Certifications Required
Current eligibility for a physical therapy license in the District of Columbia (Required) CPR certification (Required)

Essential Skills and Knowledge
A demonstrated passion for pediatric care, with a focus on addressing the diverse and holistic needs of children.
A solid understanding of pediatric physical therapy principles.
Familiarity with growth and development, as well as various health conditions and disabilities.
Strong collaborative skills and effective communication abilities, both verbal and written.
Proficiency in computer systems and software.

Key Responsibilities
Primary Duties:

  • Conduct comprehensive evaluations and document relevant findings, including patient and family interviews, review of medical history, observations, standardized assessments, and interpretation of results, adhering to departmental timelines and policies.
  • Communicate evaluation outcomes with patients/caregivers and relevant healthcare team members, addressing any inquiries effectively.
  • When appropriate, provide treatment recommendations, including further assessments, follow-up, or referrals for additional services, along with information on service frequency, duration, and prognosis. Assess discharge planning needs considering the patient's overall status.
  • Develop care plans that reflect patient/caregiver expectations and limitations.
  • Establish measurable and realistic short- and long-term goals based on the patient's health status and anticipated outcomes, incorporating patient and family input.
  • Refer patients to appropriate specialists when their needs exceed the scope of practice.
  • Independently deliver treatment according to the established care plan, in compliance with professional standards and regulations.
  • Regularly reassess and adjust treatment plans and goals based on the patient's progress and changing medical status.
  • Engage patients and families in the goal-setting process and care planning, including discharge considerations.
  • Educate and motivate patients and their families to participate in therapeutic activities, such as home exercise programs and equipment usage.
  • Ensure patient and caregiver understanding of provided information through verification and documentation.
  • Facilitate referrals for necessary equipment and community resources by discharge time.
  • Adhere to documentation policies regarding evaluations, treatment notes, and discharge summaries.
  • Accurately complete patient billing in a timely manner.
  • Utilize outcome measurement tools as per established guidelines.
  • Maintain productivity levels as determined by the Program Manager.
  • Conduct in-service training for staff as needed.
  • Support the clinical education program as assigned.
  • Provide supervision and delegate tasks to Rehabilitation Technicians and support staff as appropriate.
  • Assist in the development and revision of departmental policies and procedures.
  • Handle administrative responsibilities effectively.
  • Suggest new equipment and supply purchases when necessary.
  • Keep equipment and supplies organized and in good condition.
  • Familiarize oneself with all hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Maintain necessary skills, licensure, and credentials to perform assigned duties.
  • Complete required orientation and training to ensure competencies are met.
  • Foster effective interdepartmental communication and relationships within the hospital system.
  • Participate in performance improvement initiatives to enhance care quality.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, including those governing professional practice.
