Position Overview

Scope of Responsibilities

The Director of Audits is tasked with overseeing complex auditing and program evaluation activities. This includes:

  • Leading audits and special reviews, including compliance assessments and internal control evaluations.

  • Collaborating with the County Auditor to define departmental objectives and represent the office in meetings with County Council and officials.

Work is performed to the highest professional standards, requiring independent judgment and expertise in directing departmental operations. The outcomes of this role are assessed through various methods, including direct observation and review of work products.

Supervisory Duties

The Assistant County Auditor supervises a team of professional analysts and auditors, providing guidance and support to ensure departmental goals are met. This role also necessitates discretion and sound judgment to protect confidential information.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan, supervise, and engage in complex assignments while reviewing and evaluating staff performance.
  • Analyze challenging budget requests and operational proposals from agencies under the County Council's authority.
  • Engage with County Council members and officials, presenting findings and recommendations during meetings.
  • Act as a liaison with external auditing firms and local jurisdiction representatives.
Qualifications

Education: A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in accounting or finance is required.

Experience: A minimum of seven years in governmental or public accounting and auditing is essential. Candidates should possess certification as a public accountant or a master's degree in a related field, or a combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in performance auditing of governmental entities in accordance with GAGAS.
  • Two or more years of supervisory experience.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
