Job Overview:

The Solar Energy Performance Specialist will oversee energy modeling and performance assessment of photovoltaic (PV) installations during the proposal, engineering, and construction phases for various projects. This role involves optimizing solar PV system sizes based on client energy generation needs. The individual will collaborate closely with third-party engineering firms during the design phase of each solar power plant to ensure that the equipment is accurately represented in the construction documentation. During performance evaluations, this specialist will assist the Senior Performance Engineer in verifying that the capacity output of the PV plants aligns with contractual obligations. This position requires close coordination with construction and commissioning teams to address performance diagnostics related to the functionality of the power plants throughout construction, commissioning, and warranty periods. Additionally, this role will support the internal Electrical Engineering team as directed by the Senior Performance Engineer or the Manager of SCADA & Performance Engineering.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Develop energy generation models using PVsyst for project proposals as well as for awarded and constructed projects, accommodating various solar PV module technologies. Assist in the development of performance testing contracts and engage in technical discussions with clients. Analyze utility-scale PV systems' modeled and measured performance using PVsyst to establish linear regressions in compliance with ASTM E standards. Calculate system availability based on data gathered from SCADA or on-site evaluations as necessary. Contribute to ongoing research initiatives aimed at enhancing the modeling of PV systems throughout their operational lifespan. Provide commissioning and performance testing support to the Operations and Site Construction teams. Utilize expertise in potential PV system component failures and modeling challenges to troubleshoot systems underperforming against expected capacity and energy production. Prepare detailed test reports and deliver technical presentations on testing outcomes to clients as required. Review field-testing data, including PV array infrared imaging and open-circuit voltage assessments, to identify performance discrepancies or component failures. Analyze electrical characteristics to identify fault patterns and validate evidence for potential warranty claims. Engage in discussions with clients to address inquiries regarding PV system performance and suggest possible next steps for performance investigations. Create data visualizations and written reports tailored for audiences ranging from technical experts to management personnel. Draft work orders under existing Master Service Agreements for third-party subject matter experts or consultants. Assist the Senior Performance Engineer in scheduling tasks during pre-construction and construction phases of projects. Support the Request for Quote (RFQ) process by collaborating with vendors in support of the Estimating Department. Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Mechanical, Computer Science, Data Analytics Engineering, or a related engineering discipline from an ABET accredited institution. 2-5 years of experience in modeling modules, racking, inverters, and related equipment for effective energy modeling of utility-scale solar PV projects.

PREFERRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Proficient understanding of manufacturers' modeling parameters, application limitations, and commissioning guidelines. Strong ability to prioritize, multitask, and follow through on assigned projects with minimal supervision. Capability to thrive in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a positive demeanor in challenging situations. Professional interaction with various external parties via email, text, telephone, or in person. Excellent organizational skills to document and track issues from inception to resolution. Exceptional problem-solving skills with the ability to analyze situations and propose solutions. Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. Proficient in PVsyst and Microsoft Office, with demonstrated ability to model expected system output for utility-scale PV projects using PVsyst or similar software. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to interpret and understand technical plans and specifications.
