To qualify for appointment pending examination, candidates must possess a valid license to practice medicine in New York State (refer to the limited permit option below); AND have completed two years of post-licensure medical experience.
  • Limited permit option: This option is available solely in the Office of Mental Health and the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities.

    If licensed in another state or by written examination in Canada AND meet the other criteria for Clinical Physician 1 or 2, you are also eligible if you hold a current limited permit to practice medicine in New York State.

    If appointed, you must secure your license within one year from the date your limited permit was issued. Failure to do so will result in removal from your position.
**For the purpose of these examinations: Qualifying post-licensure medical experience encompasses general medical practice in a private, clinical, or hospital setting, which includes diagnosing and treating illnesses and injuries, interpreting x-rays and laboratory tests, conducting physical examinations, and providing basic primary preventative care. This may include, but is not limited to, experience in internal medicine, family medicine, preventative medicine, or emergency medicine.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The individual in this role independently diagnoses, treats, prescribes, and delivers comprehensive medical care and treatment services for assigned individuals; provides clinical oversight and mentorship to other medical professionals; and may oversee and manage medical services for a designated facility, unit, or program.

This role involves delivering medical services to individuals within a specified region.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs the responsibilities of a Clinical Physician 2, including but not limited to the following:

  • Provides a range of general medical care and treatment services for assigned individuals. This includes obtaining, reviewing, updating, and documenting individual information and responses to treatments.
  • Conducts physical examinations; orders, performs, and interprets diagnostic tests and procedures; determines and/or confirms diagnoses and treats various general medical conditions.
  • Prescribes and/or administers treatments, medications, therapies, vaccinations, and other medical care to address or prevent illness, disease, or injury.
  • Collaborates with other healthcare professionals and disciplines.
  • Explains and discusses procedures, test results, diagnoses, and prescribed treatments with individuals, families, and care providers.
  • Refers individuals to other healthcare providers based on diagnostic and treatment needs.
  • Participates in discharge planning.
  • Maintains medical documentation in compliance with agency, state, and federal requirements.
  • Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team, attending meetings, and serving on committees and in work groups as assigned.
  • Medical on Call (MOC) for the designated region.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Additional Comments:
The hiring salary includes the statutory hiring rate, increased hiring salary, and geographic differential.
