Position Overview

At Houston Methodist, the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Specialist role is pivotal in delivering high-quality patient care and services to a diverse array of patients and their families. This position involves performing essential medical tasks such as EKGs and lab specimen collection under the guidance of licensed nursing staff or healthcare providers. The EMT Specialist is responsible for executing daily living activities within defined unit limits and job responsibilities.

Core Responsibilities

  • Actively participates as a collaborative team member, responding positively to colleagues' requests for support and fostering a constructive work atmosphere with the interprofessional care team. Demonstrates problem-solving abilities and effectively manages multiple priorities with minimal oversight.
  • Serves as a mentor, utilizing critical thinking skills to guide new EMTs and support staff in understanding unit protocols and readiness, particularly in patient decontamination scenarios.
  • Engages with peers, staff, and physicians in a respectful and supportive manner, promoting open communication to achieve shared understanding. Communicates effectively to facilitate work efforts and resolve issues promptly.
  • Acts as an educational resource regarding unit competencies and validation processes relevant to the role.
  • Contributes to enhancing department performance metrics related to employee engagement through peer accountability.

Patient Care Responsibilities

  • Models patient and family-centered care principles while providing direct patient support under the supervision of a registered nurse. Accurately documents screenings, administered care, diagnostic assessments, and treatment procedures in accordance with established protocols.
  • Conducts regular patient observations, ensuring that needs are met and reporting any changes in condition to the licensed nurse to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
  • Plays a role in improving patient satisfaction scores through effective communication and bedside handoff practices.

Quality and Safety Functions

  • Utilizes rapid assessment skills to identify patient severity and potential risks, communicating findings to the appropriate healthcare providers.
  • Manages incoming patient information efficiently, ensuring patient privacy and safety.
  • Reports incidents and near misses promptly to enhance operational processes and safety measures.

Resource Management

  • Utilizes resources effectively, minimizing waste and assisting with staffing needs across the service line as required.
  • Maintains an organized environment that facilitates access to necessary supplies and equipment.

Professional Development

  • Seeks opportunities for continuous learning and skill enhancement, engaging in performance improvement initiatives and educational activities.
  • Participates in shared governance activities, contributing innovative ideas to improve departmental operations.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of an EMT-Paramedic program or equivalent certification.

Experience

  • Minimum of six months of pre-hospital or hospital experience as an EMT or Paramedic.

Licenses and Certifications

  • State Licensure as a Paramedic or Emergency Medical Technician-Advanced.
  • Current certifications in Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, and Pediatric Advanced Life Support.

Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrates necessary skills and competencies to perform assigned duties safely.
  • Effective communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities with minimal supervision.

Work Environment

  • Uniform required: Scrubs.
  • On-call requirements may apply during emergencies.
