POSITION SUMMARY

The University of St. Thomas is seeking qualified individuals for the role of Power Systems Control Engineer within the School of Engineering.

This position is funded through grants and is anticipated to be a one-year, benefits-eligible term appointment, contingent on departmental needs.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

The University of St. Thomas (UST) Center for Microgrid Research is actively seeking a Power Systems Control Engineer with expertise in modeling and designing control systems for power electronics applications. This role will contribute to the Center's research on microgrid systems powered by advanced power electronics. Responsibilities include:

  • Innovating solutions and technical strategies for modeling and designing advanced power electronics-based power systems in collaboration with colleagues and external partners.
  • Leading the authorship of project reports, journal articles, conference papers, and presentations.
  • Overseeing technical proposals for the development of new projects and business opportunities.
  • Effectively managing collaborative teams comprising staff and students.
QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications

  • This project is funded by the Department of Defense. Export control laws define a US person as a US citizen, permanent resident (green card), or refugee/asylee. Certain restrictions apply to non-US persons from specific countries.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field with a minimum of 1 year of relevant experience.
  • Must possess a valid US driver's license and be eligible to work in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field with 5 or more years of experience.
  • Doctorate in Electrical Engineering or a related field with 3 or more years of experience.
  • Extensive technical knowledge in control system design (both hardware and software) for power electronics applications.
  • Proven experience in modeling power electronics systems (e.g., Matlab, Typhoon) including dc/ac inverters, dc/dc converters, ac/dc rectifiers, and back-to-back converters.
  • Experience with Hardware-in-the-loop control testing and optimization for power electronics.
  • Familiarity with networked control methodologies, control architecture, and distributed control systems.
  • Knowledge of communication systems such as Modbus and DNP3.
  • Experience in modeling, controlling, and analyzing the dynamic stability of power electronics systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to serve as a principal investigator on multiple or complex projects.
  • Strong analytical, task management, and communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Proven project management and leadership capabilities, with experience in scoping, scheduling, budgeting, and building effective cross-disciplinary teams.
  • Track record of generating innovative ideas, leading the development of significant new project opportunities and proposals, and collaborating across diverse disciplines.
  • Active engagement in the professional community with demonstrated leadership roles on relevant technical committees.
