You will collaborate closely with the Site Lead and Recreation Supervisor to design, implement, and oversee innovative programs tailored for our participants.


POSITION CHARACTERISTICS

The Recreation Program Assistant will support the Site Lead in all facets of the program, taking an active role at their designated site. There may be occasions where you will substitute for the Site Lead.


SUPERVISION STRUCTURE

Receives general oversight from the Recreation Supervisor and Site Lead while providing guidance to part-time staff and volunteers.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (Illustrative Only)

  • Ensure the safety and well-being of children and staff at all times, maintaining a clean and secure environment.
  • Assist in facilitating a variety of educational and recreational activities for the Schoolmates Program, including sports, games, arts, music, health, science, nature, crafts, and both indoor and outdoor activities.
  • Support the Site Lead in preparing weekly and monthly activity plans and assist in executing approved program strategies with staff.
  • Address program inquiries from participants, parents, and community members, directing them to the Site Lead or Recreation Supervisor as necessary.
  • Instruct children on the safe use of recreational equipment and supplies.
  • Set up and utilize various recreational, educational, and cleaning equipment related to the program, as well as standard office equipment, including computers.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  • Play-based curriculum and methods used in recreational activities for elementary school children.
  • Principles of recreation program supervision for youth.
  • Applicable regulations related to the program and facility.
  • Techniques for delivering exceptional customer service to the public and stakeholders.
  • Safety protocols, including basic first aid and CPR.
  • Record-keeping practices and basic arithmetic.

Skills Required:

  • Ability to plan, organize, direct, supervise, and evaluate the work of assigned staff.
  • Train staff in program activities and safety protocols.
  • Interpret and explain policies and regulations effectively.
  • Develop and implement age-appropriate recreational activities for school-aged children.
  • Maintain accurate participant records.
  • Handle medical emergencies calmly and effectively, providing basic first aid as needed.
  • Ensure facilities and program equipment are maintained in a clean and secure manner.
  • Exercise independent judgment within established guidelines.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues and community members.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Equivalent to an Associate's Degree in child development, early childhood education, recreation, or a related field, along with two years of experience working with youth in group settings. A bachelor's degree may substitute for one year of required experience.


REQUIREMENTS:

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Must possess a valid California Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain First Aid and CPR Certifications.
  • Vaccination Status: Must provide COVID vaccination status information and confirmation if vaccinated.

Successful candidates must pass a Department of Justice live fingerprint scan, background checks, and a Tuberculosis screening prior to employment.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Must have the strength, stamina, and mobility to perform moderate physical work, including lifting and carrying equipment weighing up to 35 pounds. The role may involve significant standing, walking, pushing, bending, and lifting.


WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Employees will work in a school setting with varying noise levels and may be exposed to blood and body fluids while providing first aid. Appropriate attire for recreational activities is required.


WORK SCHEDULE:

This is a part-time, at-will position requiring an average of 20-29 hours per week, typically Monday through Friday, between 1:00 PM and 6:15 PM. Weekend work may be required, and hours may not exceed 1400 annually.

The City of Piedmont is a charter city with approximately 11,000 residents, situated in the scenic Oakland Hills, overlooking the San Francisco Bay. The city features established, high-quality single-family homes and numerous parks and landscaped areas.
