About the Role

As a Correctional Officer with the State of Vermont, you will play a vital role in maintaining a safe and secure environment for inmates and staff. This position requires a unique blend of security, human services, and leadership skills, making it a rewarding career for those who are passionate about corrections.

The Department of Corrections offers a comprehensive training program for new Correctional Officers, which includes a week of observation at the correctional facility, six weeks of instruction at the Vermont Correctional Academy, and 80 hours of onsite training. This training will equip you with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in this role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise and custody of inmates
  • Provide training and support to inmates
  • Work collaboratively with other staff members to maintain a safe and secure environment
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development

Requirements

  • High school graduation or equivalent
  • Two years or more of full-time work experience
  • OR one year or more of college-level coursework and one year or more of full-time work experience
  • OR two years or more of college-level coursework

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a correctional setting
  • Military experience

Special Requirements

  • Overtime work is required to maintain safe staffing levels
  • Ability to work overtime as required is considered an essential function of this job class
  • Must attend and pass annual mandated training
