Madison, Wisconsin, United States University of Wisconsin Full time
Job Summary:

The Department of Surgery at the University of Wisconsin is seeking an exceptional Reconstructive Microsurgeon to join our Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. We are looking for candidates with a track record of clinical excellence and academic contributions, as demonstrated through training and/or practice experience.

The successful candidate will be a key member of the team and will contribute to the three academic missions of our division: Clinical Care, Education, and Research. Experience in microvascular breast reconstruction and/or lymphatic surgery is highly encouraged.

The successful candidate will also be involved in research and resident and medical student education. This position includes potential leadership opportunities in breast reconstruction and microsurgery.

The UW Department of Surgery consists of more than 160 faculty across eleven specialty divisions, performing more than 25,000 operations annually.

The Department also trains more than 70 residents and fellows and is consistently ranked amongst the top surgery programs with extramural research funding, currently 7th in the nation according to Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research.

The department provides a robust infrastructure of services, including academic resources such as The Wisconsin Surgical Outcomes Research Program (WiSOR), which provides support, resources, and a collaborative environment to facilitate surgical health services research at the University of Wisconsin.

The Department's Office of Clinical Research provides 24/7, 365-day clinical trial coordinator support for Clinical Trials as well as regulatory support for research, and the grants management team provides comprehensive pre-award to post-award support.

The Surgical Collaborative of Wisconsin also provides access to a network of surgeons throughout the state and this platform provides opportunities for collaborative quality improvement that improves the care of surgical patients throughout the state and region.

The UW SMPH Division of Plastic Surgery includes 13 full-time faculty members, 18 integrated plastic surgery residents, 2 research fellows, 7 advanced practice providers, and an administrative staff of eight.

The full breadth of plastic surgery clinical care is performed for adults and children, including general reconstruction, breast surgery, microsurgery, pediatric plastic and craniofacial surgery, gender affirmation surgery, hand and upper extremity surgery, aesthetic surgery, migraine surgery, and lower limb preservation surgery.

The Division also participates in multiple robust collaborative inter-disciplinary programs, including gender affirming treatment and services, oncologic reconstruction, hand and upper extremity surgery, and pediatric craniofacial and vascular anomaly programs, among others.

The majority of clinical care occurs at University Hospital, American Family Children's Hospital, and the Veterans Hospital, all of which are physically attached facilities.

Additional clinical care is provided at the East Madison Hospital, Meriter Hospital, St. Mary's Hospital, and Madison Surgery Center.

Over the last three decades, the Division has developed and led a very successful and sustainable global surgery program with ongoing philanthropic support.

A competitive salary and benefit package is provided, including generous academic support.

UW-Madison is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer.

SMPH is committed to being a diverse, equitable, inclusive, and anti-racist workplace and is an Equal Employment Opportunity, Affirmative Action employer.

Applications from Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) individuals, LGBTQ+ and non-binary identities, women, persons with disabilities, military service members, and veterans are strongly encouraged.

Responsibilities:

This position will encompass the full scope of an academic adult plastic and reconstructive surgery/microsurgery.

You will join a burgeoning division and be supported by an outstanding group of both junior and senior faculty.

Elective and emergency surgical practice will be based primarily at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics with a focus on adult microsurgery and general reconstructive surgery.

This position will support the Division of Plastic Surgery in its effort to maintain and grow an existing busy microsurgical practice, including breast reconstruction, lymphatic surgery, lower extremity reconstruction, and reconstruction of the abdominal wall and trunk.

Call responsibilities for plastic surgery patients will be shared with divisional colleagues.

An interest in global surgery and global health are preferable, and an interest in research is essential.

For those appointed to the CHS title track, academic responsibilities will include teaching medical students and plastic surgery residents.

Academic duties and responsibilities beyond baseline faculty expectations will depend on individual interests and expertise.

The Department of Surgery, the School of Medicine and Public Health, and the University of Wisconsin offer an exceptional environment in which to establish and grow a robust academic career.

Adjustments to percentage of time dedicated to clinical activity, research, and scholarly activities can be made based on the successful applicant's line of scientific inquiry or potential academic leadership responsibilities.
