Role Responsibilities

As the inaugural legal professional at Reserv, you will serve as the primary legal advisor, overseeing all legal affairs for the organization. Your responsibilities will include formulating and executing legal strategies that align with our business goals, managing legal risks, and ensuring adherence to applicable laws and regulations.

This role will involve establishing and nurturing scalable operations and processes for the Legal department's collaboration with business and engineering teams. A proactive and innovative mindset, coupled with a strong grasp of startup dynamics, is essential for navigating complex legal environments.

Initially, you will report to the Vice-President of Strategy, who has a background in securities law, and eventually, this position may evolve to report directly to the CEO.

Key Responsibilities

To thrive as Reserv's first legal hire, you will need to blend deep industry knowledge with a strategic approach to risk management. Your expertise will be vital in navigating the intersection of insurance services and cutting-edge technology.

  • Operational Duties:
    • Develop a scalable Legal division with processes for contract review, vendor management, and intellectual property collaboration.
    • Assess and institutionalize Reserv's risk appetite through scalable procedures.
    • Source vendors and manage litigation counsel.
    • Collaborate with the Compliance team to create effective risk management strategies.
  • Legal Duties:
    • Maintain a thorough understanding of market-standard provisions in contracts and manage litigation effectively.
    • Negotiate, draft, and review complex agreements, ensuring legal soundness and alignment with company interests.
    • Create and refine legal templates for various applications.
  • Strategic Partnership: Position the Legal division as a key partner to business teams, enhancing overall agility and clarity.
Qualifications
  • 5+ years of legal experience, including both Big Law and in-house roles at startups.
  • Experience as the first or second legal hire at a startup, contributing to the development of the legal function.
  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to the state bar in your jurisdiction.
