Primary Job Functions
- Operate locomotives to transport material and spot rail cars according to a switch list.
- Regularly operate locomotives in a congested area, requiring caution to prevent damage to rail cars or accidents to employees.
- Operate switches and direct the flow of cars in the rail yard.
- Maintain the area in a neat and orderly manner and report work hazards.
Knowledge and Skills Required
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required; or the ability to successfully complete an on-site basic skills assessment.
- A valid driver's license is necessary.
- The ability to work effectively and efficiently both as a member of a team and independently is essential.
- Able to follow written and/or verbal instructions with minimal supervision.
- Dependable and reliable to show up for scheduled work shifts, including overtime.
Environmental and Working Conditions
- Exposed to dirt, fumes, smoke, and heat. Work outdoors and will be exposed to the elements.
- Moderate physical exertion is required, including lifting relatively heavy objects using a forklift or other mechanical means. Some climbing into and out of vehicles, crane cabs, etc., as well as frequent walking.
- Must follow prescribed safety rules to avoid possible injury.
