The Senior Clinical Laboratory Specialist at Massachusetts General Hospital plays a crucial role in ensuring the quality, safety, and efficiency of the blood bank operations. Reporting to the Senior Clinical Manager, this individual works closely with the BTS Medical Director, Laboratory Supervisors, Compliance Officer, Transfusion Safety Officer, and the Blood Bank IT Team to provide technical expertise in blood banking and assist in key projects to improve blood bank operations.

The primary functions of this position include providing technical expertise in blood banking, assisting in key projects to improve blood bank operations, and performing bench testing as necessary. The Technical Specialist is also responsible for assisting with the implementation of a new Blood Bank Laboratory Information System (LIS) and leading the implementation and oversight of several remote blood storage devices.

The goal of these projects is to improve the quality, safety, and efficiency of the products and services provided by the MGH Blood Transfusion Service and to comply with regulatory standards, including FDA regulations. The Senior Clinical Laboratory Specialist is also responsible for maintaining competency in technical areas, performing production bench work as necessary, and participating in specific regulatory activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical expertise in blood banking and assist in key projects to improve blood bank operations
  • Assist with the implementation of a new Blood Bank Laboratory Information System (LIS)
  • Lead the implementation and oversight of several remote blood storage devices
  • Maintain competency in technical areas
  • Perform production bench work as necessary
  • Participate in specific regulatory activities

Qualifications:

  • MT(ASCP) certification required
  • BB Specialist certificate preferred
  • Bachelors degree in science or medical technology
  • Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible experience in a transfusion service or blood center setting
  • OR minimum of 3 years as a Senior Medical Technologist in the blood bank at MGH
  • Active national general certification (MLS (ASCP) or Specialist in Blood Bank (or equivalent)
  • Total of 3 consecutive years of performance which meets or exceeds expectations at the Senior Medical Technologist level
  • Thirty-six hours of documented continuing education in previous 3 years
