Job Overview

The Lead Mechanic for Heavy Machinery is tasked with the maintenance and repair of construction equipment, component assemblies, and parts both in the workshop and on-site. This role involves diagnosing issues, ordering parts, writing technical reports, managing warranty claims, ensuring the upkeep of company assets, and maintaining effective communication with team members. The position operates under the general supervision of the Shop Foreman.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct repairs on machinery and components.
  • Formulate a comprehensive repair strategy and sequence.
  • Identify required parts, materials, and tools.
  • Execute repairs accurately and safely, ensuring quality assurance testing of components or systems.

  • Complete all necessary documentation promptly and legibly for parts requisition, special tool usage, daily service logs, and work order completion.

  • Provide updates on repair progress to the direct supervisor as needed.
  • Manage the retrieval and return of parts and materials through the company's parts ordering system.

  • Oversee the borrowing and return of specialized tools from the Tool Room, ensuring proper care and usage of all tools, including major shop equipment such as air compressors and cranes.

  • Utilize company vehicles and service trucks responsibly, reporting any vehicle issues to the supervisor immediately.

  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment, both in the workshop and service vehicle.
  • Ensure tools and tool carriers are kept in a safe and organized manner.
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional duties and projects as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Knowledge of operation and maintenance of heavy-duty construction machinery.
  • Understanding of safety hazards and precautions in the trade.
  • Proficiency in using hand and power tools for heavy equipment maintenance and repair.

  • Experience with servicing equipment such as A/C recyclers and hydraulic jacks.
  • Aptitude for diagnosing defects in heavy machinery.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Exceptional customer service abilities.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and integrity at all times.
  • Demonstrated sound judgment in all situations.

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Associate degree in Diesel or Equipment Technology or four (4) years of apprenticeship experience preferred.

  • Three to five years of relevant experience.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this role, the employee must be attentive and is regularly required to communicate effectively. The employee frequently stands, walks, uses hands for handling or feeling, and reaches with hands and arms. Occasionally, the employee may sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds over long distances (more than 20 feet). Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. This position necessitates the operation of a vehicle. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

Work Environment and Additional Requirements

This position regularly requires the use of personal or company vehicles for business purposes. Individuals must be physically capable of operating vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license, and maintain an acceptable driving record. Employees in this role will be subject to random Motor Vehicle Record checks and alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment.
