Heavy Equipment Technician

Job Summary:
The Service Shop Tech is responsible for performing routine maintenance checks and repairs on heavy equipment in a developing capacity. This role requires minimal technical assistance from experienced-level mechanics and involves a range of activities including maintenance, repair, and service.
Key Responsibilities:- Perform routine maintenance checks and adjustments on heavy equipment, including fluid levels, hoses, belts, brakes, tires, and clutches.
- Change filters and oil lubricate vehicles and motor-driven equipment.
- Troubleshoot malfunctions in equipment and repair.
- Diagnose, repair, and maintain speed tandem drive axles with air or electric shift, hydrostatic driven, heavy-duty multi-axle suspensions.
- Tune gas and diesel engines, service valves, fuel filters, and turbochargers.
- Pressure check fuel filters, adjust injector heights, fuel racks, governors, etc.
- Diagnose problems, disassemble units, repair or replace parts, and reassemble units in cooling, drive, brake, electrical, steering, heating, and air conditioning, hydraulic, and air systems.
- Repair and service track drive sprockets, rails, idler wheels, hand bars, track adjusters, hydraulic, reversers, final drives, brake bands, steering clutches, and hydrostatic transmissions.
- Ensure all jobs are completed and work is done in a proficient and safe manner.
- Clean the shop workspace after every job is finished.
- Take advantage of all training offered by the company.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or equivalent, accredited trade school graduate preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in the construction and mining machinery industry.
- Working knowledge of standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in repair and maintenance of machinery and engines.
- Knowledge of safety issues in the use of tools, equipment, and supplies used in repair of equipment.
- Skills in the use of a variety of hand tools, mechanized tools, jacks, and hoists.
- Skills in the use of diagnostic testing and tuning equipment, and gas and electric welding equipment.
- Ability to pass and maintain drug and alcohol testing requirement as outlined by WPI's policy.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds and bend and twist several times a day.
- Ability to read manuals and schematics, rebuild engines, and major driveline components.
- Maintain good client relations and communicate with other mechanics about repair work needed.
- Current driver's license and acceptable driving record per WPI insurance carrier standards when driving a company vehicle.
- Ability to effectively operate test equipment and have good trouble-shooting skills.
- Ability to read hydraulic and electrical schematics.
- Dependable and work independently.
Typical hours of work Monday through Friday; 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Weekend hours as necessary.
May require work in inclement weather conditions and/or hazardous work environments.
