The Automotive Maintenance Specialist is a vital position responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining all municipal vehicles and equipment. This role requires proficiency in welding techniques for various applications, accurate record-keeping, and coordination with other staff and external vendors for fleet requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct routine maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, and skilled mechanical repairs on all municipal vehicles and equipment, including heavy-duty trucks, light-duty vehicles, and hydraulic machinery.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues using diagnostic tools and manuals.
  • Install specialized mechanical and electrical components on municipal vehicles and equipment.
  • Adhere to maintenance schedules and prioritize tasks to ensure timely servicing of vehicles and compliance with regulations.
  • Maintain detailed records of maintenance and repairs, including parts used and labor hours, utilizing fleet management software.
  • Collaborate with fellow technicians and supervisors to resolve complex issues and source necessary parts.
  • Monitor and manage inventory of parts, oils, and chemicals.
  • Perform requisitions for parts and components from relevant suppliers.
  • Exhibit proficiency in welding (GMAW and SMAW) for equipment maintenance and fabrication.
  • Ensure a clean and safe work environment, including the shop and storage areas.
  • Conduct inspections and maintenance on above-ground and underground storage tanks.
  • Assist with the maintenance of work orders and service records.
  • Coordinate repairs and maintenance for vehicles and equipment utilized by other departments.
  • May assist with street maintenance and snow removal operations as needed.
  • Operate equipment safely and in accordance with training, while reporting any unsafe conditions to supervisors.
  • Attendance at work is a critical aspect of this position.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma/GED or completion of a trade or technical program.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and capable of navigating software independently.
  • Must possess a valid Class "B" CDL or be able to obtain one within 90 days.
  • Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Experience in the repair and maintenance of motorized equipment, with a minimum of three years preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Heavy equipment operation and welding skills are advantageous.
Physical Demands
This position requires the ability to lift weights up to 100 pounds (mechanically assisted), and involves standing, walking, and using hands for extended periods. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, requiring adaptability to various weather conditions and potential exposure to hazardous materials.
