Job Overview

Position Summary:

This role involves working as an hourly industrial mechanic specializing in roll service operations. The Mechanic is responsible for executing skilled tasks related to the disassembly, preparation, cleaning, inspection, assembly, maintenance, and repair of various paper machine rolls, metal components, and tools. A high level of accuracy and precision is required to follow instructions and specifications meticulously. Tasks are assigned through verbal directives, sketches, blueprints, and by examining worn or damaged parts. While employees determine their work methods, all tasks are subject to inspection throughout the process and upon completion to ensure quality and compliance with standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Disassemble, clean, inspect, and reassemble components related to paper machine rolls using an array of power and hand tools.
  • Accurately measure work using precision instruments such as micrometers.
  • Utilize, adjust, clean, and maintain the tools, machinery, and equipment relevant to the mechanic's trade.
  • Install and remove bearings and assemblies according to OEM specifications using various tools and techniques.
  • Continuously seek ways to enhance operations, reduce turnaround times, streamline processes, and collaborate effectively to deliver exceptional customer service.

Knowledge Requirements:

  • Familiarity with job-related materials.
  • Understanding of the tools, materials, methods, and standard practices within the mechanic's field.
  • Knowledge of OEM specifications and measurements pertinent to precision bearing fits and mounting procedures.
  • Working knowledge of various bearing types, housings, journals, end covers, clutch hubs, seals, and labyrinths.
  • Awareness of safety hazards and precautions associated with the mechanic's trade.
  • Experience with Paper Machine Rolls is highly advantageous.
  • Ability to operate overhead cranes and manage heavy objects safely.
  • Comprehension of safe work practices and the ability to utilize necessary personal protective equipment.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to visualize parts or equipment for assembly from rough sketches and verbal instructions.
  • Proficient in interpreting graphic instructions such as blueprints and models.
  • Effectively understand and execute oral and written instructions in English.
  • Learn job-related information primarily through observation and oral instruction in an on-the-job training environment.
  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues.
  • Work safely without posing a risk to oneself or others.

Additional Information:

  • Some roles may require performing additional essential and marginal functions based on the work location, assignment, or shift.
  • Overtime may be necessary.

Working Conditions:

  • Position involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, including extreme temperatures, dust, fumes, and loud noises.
  • Requires moderate physical activity, including handling objects weighing up to 50 pounds and standing or walking for extended periods.
  • Work environment may present some hazards or physical risks, necessitating adherence to basic safety protocols.
  • Must maintain a standing position for prolonged durations.
  • Requires precise, controlled movements for assembly tasks.
  • Involves repetitive bending or stooping.

Experience and Training:

A minimum of one year of experience as a skilled mechanic, with completion of a recognized apprenticeship program, or three years of experience as a skilled mechanic. Other combinations of experience and education that meet requirements may be considered. Experience with Paper Machine or Steel Mill rolls is highly preferred.
