Job Summary

The School District of Onalaska is seeking a skilled Sign Language Interpreter Substitute to provide communication access for deaf and hard of hearing students in integrated settings. As a vital member of our educational team, you will facilitate effective communication between students, teachers, and other stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities
  • Interpret between students, teachers, and other staff members in a variety of settings, including classrooms, meetings, and special events.
  • Establish a physical setting that optimizes communication and interaction between students and teachers.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of hearing loss, deafness, and the deaf community to provide culturally responsive support.
  • Collaborate with teachers to prepare for classes and review lesson plans to ensure accurate interpretation.
  • Provide tutorial support and assist with special education or regular classroom routines as needed.
  • Consult with teachers daily to discuss student progress and provide feedback.
  • Comply with student IEP goals and communication preferences.
Requirements
  • Valid Wisconsin Educational Interpreter license (#884) or eligibility for same.
  • Completion of an interpreter training program or verification of equivalent expertise.
  • Command of sign language in academic and vocational subject areas.
  • Conversational command of sign language with adults and children who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Ability to work effectively with classroom teachers and the teacher of the hearing impaired.
  • Willingness to continue improving signing ability and interpreting skills.
  • Ability to work independently and adapt to changing situations.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
