Position Overview:
The Event Security Coordinator (ESC) is tasked with formulating guidelines, procedures, and regulations concerning fire and life safety at events. This role encompasses full responsibility for the operational aspects of event security and medical services. The ESC will operate under the supervision of management while exercising independent judgment and initiative. A flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays, is essential for this position. Additionally, the ESC will support the Assistant Director of Public Safety with various departmental responsibilities as needed.

Compensation:
The salary range for this role is between $65,000 and $70,000.

McCormick Place, located in downtown Chicago, is recognized as the largest and most adaptable convention center in North America, boasting over 2.6 million square feet of exhibition space. It hosts some of the world's most significant conventions, meetings, and trade shows, welcoming millions of visitors annually.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the activities of contract security and EMS personnel, delegating tasks as necessary.
  • Evaluate staffing and security proposals from providers, negotiating changes and granting final approval.
  • Suggest modifications to provider proposals to align with operational policies and guidelines.
  • Participate in client site visits and planning meetings.
  • Conduct pre- and post-event inspections, documenting any property damage for management review.
  • Address complaints related to damage, theft, or injury during events, ensuring timely completion of incident reports.
  • Authorize incident reports prepared by contract security staff.
  • Respond to inquiries from clients and providers regarding security and safety matters.
  • Investigate accident locations, taking immediate action to mitigate damage and liability.
  • Enforce standards for all contracted security and medical service providers.
  • Identify areas for improvement and collaborate with management to implement necessary changes.
  • Assist in setting departmental goals and objectives.
  • Maintain event metrics to inform policy development and future planning.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Represent the Public Safety Department at industry organizations and community meetings.

Qualifications:
To succeed in this role, candidates must demonstrate the ability to fulfill essential duties effectively. The following qualifications are required:

  • Associate's degree in Criminal Justice or a related field.
  • Familiarity with the Department of Homeland Security's National Incident Management System (NIMS) and completion of Incident Command System Classes (ICS) 100/200/700.
  • Completion of ICS-300 is highly desirable.
  • A minimum of two years of experience in the convention hospitality or hotel industry.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • In-depth knowledge of the convention, meetings, exhibition, and trade show sectors.
  • Experience in event planning.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Management experience in public safety and security.
  • Ability to interpret and apply relevant laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of contemporary security and safety protocols.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to foster effective relationships with stakeholders.
  • Proficient in planning and coordinating security investigations.
  • Understanding of management principles and practices.

Technical Skills:
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications is required. Familiarity with Ungerboeck event management software is a plus.

Certificates and Licenses:

  • A valid driver's license is mandatory.
  • APP, CPP, or PSP certification through ASIS International is highly desirable.

Physical Requirements:
This role involves physical demands typical of the Event Security Coordinator position, including walking, climbing, and potential heavy lifting. The work environment includes both indoor and outdoor settings, with exposure to various conditions.

Working Environment:
The Event Security Coordinator operates in an office environment with minimal exposure to hazards, as well as in diverse indoor and outdoor settings. The ability to navigate stairs and long distances is essential, and the noise level may vary from mild to loud.
